help people who have drawn the short sticks in life.

So let's not imply that he is anything other than progressive. And more progressive than the majority of Democratic politicians, on that count anyway.

If you were forced to live on the wages of $7.25 would you be as thrilled to hear about tax credits or actually pay days that yield enough to live on without looking for that second or third job ? Would you have to learn tricks of survival like diluting your kids milk, skipping meals, making sure you are in line for the food pantry?
While they(the ones in control) fret over all the sacrifices the millionaires of the fast food world and retail shops who is backing up those who have to struggle come rent day?
If workers were paid more many mothers would be able to see their kids more, often not having to worry about family emergencies since many cannot afford a sitter. Workers would not continually be forced to switch or add on jobs which makes for unhappy workers. Happier workers means better customer service. There are so many win wins yet the mega money people still clutch onto their fifty dollar bills and refuse to see the financial light!

Subsidizing poor workers is not "the way to go". That means, instead of mostly insanely wealthy capitalists having to pay a living wage that might take back a little of the profit they suck up, the rest of the country has to pay more in taxes to subsidize slave wages. That only helps the capitalists.
