(46,340 posts)Is sensationalist news media.
Crime is down.
All the law-enforcement organizations say this.
And that includes gun violence.
But when a half-hour newscast devotes half-2/3rds of their time to a gun violence incident, even if no one is killed or even shot, that says more about our "If it bleeds it leads" news media than it does any "gun culture."

(6,635 posts)right-wing gun lobby mantra: crime is down because there are more guns. Thing is, gun deaths are on track to exceed automobile deaths by next year.

(33,982 posts)the death rate associated with a device that is supposed to safely get everyone from point a to point b, is falling faster than the death rate associated with a device that is intended to put a hole in things, like humans.
But both rates are, in fact, declining. Just, the one that isn't ever supposed to kill anyone is falling faster.
Deduct suicides from the toll (when people actually choose to kill themselves, which they can ALSO do with a car, though fortunately rarely, since it's a good way to kill a bunch of people doing it.) and once again, the device that is NEVER SUPPOSED TO KILL ANYONE takes way more lives. Imagine that.

(6,335 posts)NYTimes: "The household gun ownership rate has fallen from an average of 50 percent in the 1970s to 49 percent in the 1980s, 43 percent in the 1990s and 35 percent in the 2000s, according to the survey data, analyzed by The New York Times.
In 2012, the share of American households with guns was 34 percent, according to survey results released on Thursday."
But there are more guns in the hands of collectors and illegal purchase/theft gun owners
