What Motivates Republican Racism?

Republican ideological leaders like Paul Ryan and Rand Paul have been making headlines recently for making racially charged statements during media appearances and stump speeches. But the problem goes well beyond the racist foundations of the Republican Party, and it is actually part of their strategy to destroy social safety net programs designed to keep people out of poverty. Ring of Fire guest host Farron Cousins discusses this with attorney Howard Nations.

President Obama might have said he identified with Reagan more than Carter as a way to get white people to vote for him. Maybe he pushes aside Reagan's statements about black people and just looks at his policies.

As for black Republicans, they most likely agree with what Republicans about other black people. It seems that black Republicans like Herman Cain and Allen West would say and do the same things Ronald Reagan, Lee Atwater, Paul Ryan, and Rand Paul have said and done. In addition, they would blame black people for the things said about black people. So, I do not think they will not deny that the Republican Party has said and done these things; they will say black people deserved to have those things said about them.

The voter ID laws will preclude many very elderly people who no longer have driver's licenses from voting. It will also preclude disabled people who, like the very elderly non-drivers cannot get to the location where drivers' licenses are issued. This is especially true in rural areas and small towns. So to some extent this voter ID law could backfire.

They disparage the "urban poor," not black people, and "illegal immigrants," not Hispanics. But wink, wink, nudge, nudge, you know who they mean.
