Pres. Carter: Oliver North was a criminal

ERIN BURNETT: I’m curious what you think about this because I know this has to frustrate you on some level. The right links you to President Obama all the time. Former Reagan official Oliver North just recently said: ‘President Obama showed a failure of leadership with Ukraine. Putin has handed this by what is essentially Jimmy Carter on steroids.’ How does that make you feel?

JIMMY CARTER: I don’t pay any attention to Oliver North and I’m kind of sorry to hear you quote him. He was a criminal during the Iranian Contra crisis and was convicted of betraying the best interest of our country. And of course he is famous now because he is a constant critic of the democratic party and the democrats. But I don’t worry about that. As of a matter of fact, I don’t think anyone could have moved more strongly against the Soviet Union when they went into Afghanistan than I did.

ERIN BURNETT: And so again, you think it really is about drawing a line? So Putin knows? And believes that if he crosses there will be repercussions.

JIMMY CARTER: When you make a promise, you have got to keep it. You can’t make a deadline and then not honor it. And I think the President was convinced that what I said I would do. And I would have.

That's something that needed to be said for a long time. Neocon heads are exploding as I type these words.

With the election and events that preceded it, that's the year, for me, that this country made it's biggest turn for the worse.

It's never recovered, I don't know if it ever will.

I was shocked by his win, and then years later SMH that North was getting away with it, and later still that he could actually have a television show or be a celebrity.

pension.

And I'm not even talking about all the "high crimes" shredding and lying and arms for hostages and all that other shit. I'm talking about this--imagine being an ordinary servicemember or government worker; do you think they'd get off easy and get a FauxSnooze program for their trouble as well?

Although North had been granted limited immunity for his testimony, he was later convicted of criminal charges related to Iran-Contra activities (a conviction that was eventually overturned on the grounds that witnesses had been influenced by his immunized testimony). One of the charges against North was that he had received a $16,000 home security system paid for out of the proceeds of the Iran-Contra affair and had forged documents to cover his receipt of an illegal gratuity. North admitted that he knew the security system was a "gift" but maintained he never inquired about who had paid for it or how it was financed, and he was insistent that he needed the security system because the government had failed to provide adequate protection against international terrorists for him and his family.

when he was testifying before congress. My husband looked at me astonished as he was portrayed as this great hero and I was saying he was a big liar.

Why, It's Ollie North on the far right! (How appropriate)

From The National Security Archive. When this photo was officially released North's image was cut out.

North was a simple facilitator.

People, this was the start of the RW coup that we are under today.
