Does White-Hispanic sound odd? "Hispanic/Latino People Identifying As White On The 2010 Census"

The following video is a young bi-racial man (his Dad is Black, his Mom white) talking about about new terms such as White Hispanic and White with Black ancestry. He points out that a large part of the Latin/Hispanic population that lives in the USA identified as being "White" on the 2010 census and by doing so increased the White population in America by 6%. He believes that the US has introduced these terms to hide the fact that America is becoming less White.

1. No, because "hispanic" isn't a racial designation, any more than "Spanish"

or "French." It's an ethnic designation.

2. Correct. They are all classified as "Caucasian"

So, white would be a correct choice, regardless of actual skin color.

3. The "correct" choice for a hispanic would be however they identify.

Which should probably be the same choice for everyone. Based on the textbooks when I was in high school, that's how it was done in Brazil -- you were whatever race you declared yourself to be.

4. I don't really go along with race on forms in the first place.

My daughter is white, both sides. On my side, I am 128th American Indian. Pretty thin, huh? Well it shows up in my daughter. Black hair, oliveish color skin, facial features. I watch her being born. She has certain family characteristics, so I know for sure she is mine. There have been issue when she fills out forms and says she is white/Caucasian. Who cares? We are all people and those were school enrollment forms.
BTY she is a 4.0 engineering student, getting paid by the school for tutoring junior/senior year engineering students in math. (Gotta brag)

though she has red hair! And she also is a math-loving engineer.

I agree -- racial designations are getting less and less meaningful, as people intermarry.

6. All Hispanics are not classified as Caucasian. You can be black Hispanic, Asian Hispanic etc.

7. He might not be totally off on that assertion. There's a lot of fear. (Hello, Tea Party!)....

....... but you can also figure out the non-Hispanic white population from the Census stats, which gives you a truer picture of the increasing diversity of the country.
