Small Town Gay Bar - Documentary
Part I
*contains language
Small Town Gay Bar gives us a rare look at gay life in small town rural America. We get a glimpse of the pitfalls and challenges for gay people living in rural Mississippi, the heart of the Bible belt.
The documentary primarily focuses on a couple of gay bars and the folks who frequent them.
Although many stories are touched upon, one especially poignant story is that of a young man who was brutally killed because he was considered to be gay. Scotty Weaver, age 18, was strangled and stabbed numerous times... and his burned body was found a few miles from his home. Film touches upon picketing of his funeral by Phelps' group, WBC. When you see the difficulties involved in living an out life in rural America, it gives pause to the strengths of character of those who perservere against the society building obstacles around them -- constantly trying to force them down.
Their ability to rise up and fight against all manner of difficulties is inspired.
