The state of the European economy has become something of an issue in our presidential campaign, but how bad things are over there? Correspondent Allen Pizzey finds out.

I enjoyed that story.
Thanks for posting it here!

(60,340 posts)There was a time when Europe's youth and aspiring middle class saw America as a shining beacon of opportunity. But it's no longer seen as the ultimate career and lifestyle improvement.
"In Northern Europe they're looking at the United States and say, 'Boy, I'm happy to be HERE,'" said Kornblum, "because unemployment is much lower, job security is higher, education is free, medical care is comprehensive, and so they have to be fairly adventurous to believe that they would be better off in the United States than they are here right now."
And if they did decide to come to America, some of the presidential candidates would have to drastically alter their perceptions (to say nothing of their rhetoric) to win their votes.

(27,630 posts)No way are europeans going to give up their health care for the US', unless they would also be making big bucks in the US, or something. Health care is the deal breaker.

(27,630 posts)Oh, well. I read many of the comments after the article, and I have to say:
Americans who have strong gut feelings about what Europe is like are just as dumb as europeans who have strong gut feelings (misconceptions) about what america must be like. It's just fucking embarrassing! Ignorant-yet-loud people should be embarrassed.

(32,047 posts)The GOP candidates are chock full o' shit. But I suppose if pressed they'd just say "those were not intended to be factual statements", LOL.
