Beyond the NSA spying, the advance of the MIC, cuts to SS, inequality of the tax burden....beyond all that, because the loss of Net Neutrality affects all of those things and more in the long run. Because once the corporate class can dictate what sites we visit, due to causing a headache of getting onto sites like a future DU, then all truthful information is gone. Eventually the Internet will just be one big TV network conglomerate, and Springsteen's song will apply to the net as well. 57 channels and nothin' on.
Its already happening with different speed plans, where the technology costs for providers is not in increasing the speed. That part is easy, you just turn on the taps. The investment is in systems to slow down the bandwidth to various speeds. So their profit margins are less with the slow plans because of this extra cost. Why would they do that? Because they make all their major profits on the faster speeds where they can charge an arm and a leg by simply leaving the stream alone.
I just wanted to edit in one other point. It always amazes me that these Net Neutrality threads never get much response. This one will probably disappear soon down the list. I guess its not a "sexy" issue as they say. I kind of liken it to the frogs in the pot of heating water. Most people just sit in the pot with the frogs while their internet bills go up while their speeds go down...purposely. And while big corporate multinational owned sites will be a snap to get on with fast playing video spots and razzle dazzle, real news sites like DU and other sites similar will take ten minutes to load. Sure most of us here will still put up with the wait, but in the corporate boardrooms they know that the rest of the "we want it now" generation will not have the patience and will go to the surprisingly super speedy News sites like Fox instead.
