Thom Hartmann: Could a Rand Paul candidacy be the best thing ever for liberals?

Believe it or not - a Rand Paul presidential run would be a great thing for the Democratic Party.

Sorry. I strongly disagree. I think a Rand Paul nomination would pull the Democrats to the right. JDPriestly Jan 2014 #1

There is a tendency on the part of Democrats to want to "compromise" their beliefs so as to conform with what they become convinced is the middle point of view. A Democrat facing off with Rand Paul would probably be pulled toward Paul's views.

And in the final election, Democrats would have no choice but to vote for the Democrat or risk a Rand Paul presidency -- in other words, a disastrous presidency.

Changed title to say it would pull Democrats to the right, not to the left. That is my opinion.

Senator Paul would poll so weakly that that he would almost be ignored, regardless of who the Democrats nominate. Contrary to what Mr. Hartman said, even if Hillary Clinton started sounding populist, she'll have a hard time convincing very many people she's anything but what she's always been: a Wall Street tool. We who have little more use for Wall Street Democrats than we have for Republicans will vote for her any way to keep the right wing ideologue out of the White House. Meanwhile, Hillary wins and Larry Summers gets to be Treasury Secretary after all.
