Anti-TPP protesters surround secretive negotiations

The lead negotiators for 12 countries involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership held their second day of meetings in Salt Lake City, Utah on Wednesday. The TPP is a potential new trade deal that would open up markets among nations along the Pacific Rim. The negotiations have largely been secretive so far, but the agreement is expected to impact a wide range of industries, including energy, the Internet, pharmaceuticals and more. Demonstrators have also converged on the "Crossroads of the West" to demand more transparency in the negotiations. RT's Ramon Galindo joins us from Salt Lake City, where he attended the anti-TPP protests.

This is from late November, although I thought I'd post it for those that never got a chance to see it.

origin labels on products. Worst of all it will allow multinational conglomerates to suit the USA government through a stacked court. If a company says it is losing money, because a regulation in the USA it can go to a tribunal staffed with corporate appointees and force the government to hand over our tax dollars to make up for their supposed loses.

This "Trans-Pacific Partnership" goes way beyond the giant sucking sound Ross Perot warned us about NAFTA. It jeopardizes the sovereignty of the nations involved by giving that power to large corporations like Wal-Mart, Monsanto, Goldman Sachs, Pfizer, Halliburton, Philip Morris, GE, GM, Apple.

Why the secret meetings, Mr. Obama?

According to what documents could be leaked, there are currently 11 nations involved: U.S., New Zealand, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, Mexico and Canada. Japan has shown interest. The economic power of this group is more than 40% larger than the 27- nation European Union.

TPP will offshore millions of good-paying jobs to low-wage nations, undercutting working conditions globally and increasing unemployment.
TPP will expand pharmaceutical monopoly protections and institute longer patents that will decrease access to affordable medications
TPP will limit food GMO labeling and allow the import of goods that do not meet US safe standards.
TPP will institute SOPA, PIPA, and CISPA-like regulations and Internet measures which restrict our right to free speech.
TPP will roll back Wall Street regulations, and prohibit bans on risky financial services.
TPP will give multinational corporations and private investors the right to sue nations in private tribunals. These tribunals have the power to overturn environmental, labor, or any other laws that limit profit, awarding taxpayer funded damages.
TPP will encourage the privatization of lands and natural resources in areas where indigenous people live.
