I am a retired Army colonel. For 30 years I was subject to Army Regulation 600-20, Leadership. 600-20 has changed from back then but when I was on active duty the operative part of 600-20 stated: "The commander is responsible for everything his unit does or fails to do."

Period.

No excuses.

"The commander is responsible." Not the executive officer, not the chief of staff, not a platoon sergeant, but, THE COMMANDER.

When I was a young company commander in Vietnam, responsible for the lives of 150 soldiers, if I had told my battalion commander "Well, shit, my executive officer fucked up and one of my platoon sergeants had his head up his ass and, damn, you know how it is, I'm so busy I didn't know what the fuck was going on . . . a couple of guys died, big fucking deal!! " Of course he would have said, "Well, that's okay, just try not to fuck up again."

You believe that?

Is it too much for me to expect that a man with national leadership aspirations should be held to the same standards I was held to as a young, wet-behind-the-ears lieutenant?

Or maybe I'm an old dinosaur who has lived longer than I should have.
