Related: About this forumIs he a perv? Fifteen-year-old girls and Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson.
"Now that's a woman. They got to where they're hard to find. Mainly because these boys are waiting til they're twenty years old before they marry them. Look, you wait til they get to be twenty years old and the the only picking that's going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they're about fifteen or sixteen and they'll pick your ducks. "

(590 posts)My grandmother married when she was 15 and in a northern tier state and it was not uncommon in those days (1920's). We live in an entirely different culture today, not dependent on knowing how to can/preserve/cook foods from scratch, do laundry by hand, write letters, and make soaps at home. Not to mention sewing, knitting, darning, and all the other household details for survival and social conformity. So I contest using the term 'perv' for someone who is just way retro, back nearly a century. Lest we forget, times could change where this would again be the norm. I don't agree with this guy's opinion at all. But I don't think it goes into 'perv' from this clip anyway.

Or "as well as being a...", whatever your grammatical preference might be, then just fill in the blanks. And WTF is it about this show? I barely knew it existed until a few weeks ago, when all this started up about it. I think it's bloody moronic. And so is anyone who watches it, offense intended.

(53,661 posts)His misogyny runs deep and he's a very twisted man. Just like the fans of this conservative show are.
Problem is, kids watching this will think it's valid and live up to it. I pity young women and others that will be mistreated by this mentality.
I dread to think of living beside these guys. Really, it will be impossible. The have a long, long enemy list and most of us are on it.

Southerners make it with the philosophy, Can you really do without that; Meaning spend your money wisely because you dont have much.
Bashing these guys does more harm then good no matter what they say or think.
Your just filling in the votes ballet leaving off any Democrats!

(28,936 posts)I have conservative friends who have never seen the show and they can't understand why Sarah Palin is sticking up for these guys. As white yuppies they just don't get the show at all and they know it makes the Republican part look way out of the mainstream to anyone who is not familiar with the show.

(18,672 posts)Some guys do not have the self-esteem, character or desire to deal with a strong woman. If he marries a girl who is 14 - 16, he can play daddy and maybe have 10 -15 years, in some cases much longer, where he can manipulate and control her. Eventually many women get to the point in their 30's when they aren't willing to put up with this anymore, and the tables start to turn, or they get out of the relationshiop. Some women never put up with being controlled, so it's pretty much a gamble for the insecure male.
On edit: tTo clarify, I'm only talking about insecure men, not all men. Secure men can hold their own with anyone, even a "pocket picking" female. Of course many people want a somewhat malleable partner, but I think this guy's being a bit extreme.

(8,879 posts)undoubtedly the result of an ethical relativist's acceptance of a deep-seeded (or is it seated?) patriarchy. Probably turned out just fine for her, but because your great grandparents daughter married young is not a reason for your teenage daughter to follow suit. Most enlightened people would agree.

They went off to college together and she had her first child while in college.
They have been married for over 50 years.
That does NOT make him a perv.
There are other things that Phil Robertson has said that are offensive but calling him a perv is over the top and uncalled for, in my opinion.
One of my uncles back in the 'old days' married my aunt when she was 14 years old - they were married over 60 years before he passed away.
I hope folks take into consideration that it was more common in the past to marry at a younger age than it is nowadays.

(49,002 posts)It has the tweet from 2012 mentioning Mrs. Kay's "65th bday".
But the article states that they "started dating when Kay was just 14 and got married in 1966 when she was 16." That would put her birth year as 1950 (give or take a few months). He was born in 1946. Hence the 4 years difference in ages.

Comments by Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty at the Sportsmen's Ministry in Georgia in 2009:
"Now that's a woman. They got to where they're hard to find. Mainly because these boys are waiting til they're twenty years old before they marry them. Look, you wait til they get to be twenty years old and the the only picking that's going to take place is your pocket. I went to college in the South, and it was more common. One poor fellow student felt she'd be an old maid if unmarried at 20!
One poor girl liked a certain guy. He'd married a 16 year old at home. She was an old 20!
I went to visit with one friend in the town she came from - her sister in law was 18.
Still, it is now 2013. Even in the South, I imagine that's no longer going on.

And they've just made themselves heroes to the dumbass demographic by putting down gays and blacks. The hicks who regularly watch the show hate gays and blacks to begin with.
These guys are just Sarah Palin with penises and beards.

If you really want to piss these people off, try the ending of Lord of the Rings, where, the name of Mordour would never be mentioned again.
Ever eaten wild duck? It has about the same appeal as the show. Yuk!

On the Duck Dynasty show he told his 16 year old grandson that it is best to find a young bible loving girl to marry - one that is around 15/16 that will learn how to pick duck feathers, not one that is older that will pick your pocket. It was an innocent remark, not a dirty one.
