Funny. In my late sixties, a lot of my friends have died. The percentage of those who have died who were smokers is extremely high. In fact, most of the people I know who are still living either never smoked or haven't smoked in years or never smoked very much. Saddest of all, some of my non-smoking friends who died had a spouse who smoked heavily.
I know a couple of people who are quite elderly and have smoked for a long time. At least one of them roles his own cigarettes. I don't know what the statistics are on mortality among those who role their own cigarettes and those who smoke manufactured brands (if any). Might be something to check out.
This is anecdotal and subjective. I understand that the scientific evidence, the statistics about mortality for example, support what I am saying. But what I am saying is from my heart. I am not scolding to make others feel bad. You are who you are and you do what you do. But, it is painful to lose friends and to question whether it was because your friends smoked. That is why I am sharing my experience and my impressions about smoking.
Some people would rather smoke than live. That is their right.
If you are young and you can stop smoking, do so just to be safe. If you can't stop, well, at least be honest about the fact that you may be shortening your life.
If you would rather smoke than live, please be considerate of your co-workers and family and smoke outside where they don't breathe your smoke. You might be among the few who are still smoking at the age of 98; your spouse or your child might not be able to tolerate even your second-hand smoke.

(3,622 posts)science is self-correcting. It was scientists who vetted the problem and exposed the unethical scientists who published the garbage. You can say the same thing with the anti-global warming people, but again, science is self-correcting and the truth will prevail. Science is unique in this point and bad science will be exposed, unfortunately some later than sooner.
