(8,377 posts)I am a white person who lived during the school integration period in Indiana. While Indiana MAY not have been as racist as the South in general (I believe we we the headquarters of the KKK for awhile), there was plenty of it. And IMHO, most of it was the same fear of change, fear of the unknown, fear of losing control of "traditional America" that still grips such a large percentage of our population today.
We were friends with a black family that was first to move into our neighborhood. I was a little older than Ruby when I saw their car with all its windows broken out. And like Ruby, I didn't really understand that at the time.
What a country. We think we are so advanced, but in many ways we are way behind most of the rest of the world.
International travel should be a mandatory part of everybody's education.

Thank you for the great video clip, she had dignity and grace as a child, she has it now as an adult.

(16,350 posts)I'm trying to think what could make pisdir me act that way. I just can't imagine any reason to hurt a little girl like that. Or anyone really, but a 6 year old girl?

(1,723 posts)I don't think my parents would have taken me out of school, but even up north, our schools were mostly segregated.
