But the one thing that these two great Americans don't mention is the e-voting coup that occurred during the 2002 to 2004 period, whereby 'TRADE SECRET' voting machines were spread like a plague throughout the land, with NO audit (comparison of ballots to machine totals) in half the states, and virtually no audit in the other half, and are now controlled largely by one, private, far rightwing-connected corporation, ES&S (which bought out Diebold).
To me, this is the most important political development in this country in the modern era. A FAR RIGHTWING-CONNECTED corporation is 'counting' all our votes with 'TRADE SECRET' code! And they can easily--EASILY!--rig sufficient elections to throw the country into chaos--as they tried to do recently, with their phony 'debt crisis'--and undo two hundred years of progress in political and economic democracy!
E-voting is not the only thing wrong with our democracy. It is more like the final blow. But it is THERE that we can and must start undoing the damage. We CANNOT get money out of our election system; we CANNOT restore the "Fairness Doctrine and bust up media monopolies (restore public interest journalism); we CANNOT gain ANY control over the military-industrial complex; we CANNOT repair our shredded labor unions; we CANNOT protect Social Security and Medicare; we CANNOT save our educational system--or achieve ANY of the reforms that are so critically needed--and, perhaps most important of all, we CANNOT save our dying planet, until we are able, once again, to elect REAL representatives of the American people.
We have to start there, with the most basic element of democracy: transparent vote counting!
There is no question in my mind that the CIA assassinated JFK. Recommended reading: "JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters," by James Douglass. He basically nails the CIA for killing Kennedy. There is no doubt any more. And he furthermore understands WHY IT MATTERS, as do Cenk Uygar and Oliver Stone. The CIA more than likely assassinated RFK as well, and possibly MLK. The issue was ENDLESS WAR and endless war profiteering. Our country was hijacked THEN (1963 to 1968). It has not recovered. Our democracy, our progressive ideals, our very soul as a people, are all at grave risk, at this point, because those INTERNAL murders (JFK, certainly; RFK, likely; MLK, possibly) were NOT SOLVED.
Douglass is doing a trilogy. RFK is next, then MLK. MLK, as Stone indicates, will be the hardest to prove. The other two murder 'investigations' are so full of holes as to be absurd. HOW could we have swallowed those lies?!
Cenk Uygar and Oliver Stone have done their homework. They know things and say things that almost no one else with a media platform knows or is willing to say. I wish they would take on the voting machines. It is so obvious, so blatant, and so extremely dangerous, as to an internal collapse into outright fascism and naziism that we can do nothing about, because we CANNOT elect REAL representatives of the people.
