The Democrats acquiesce to often. Obama wanted single payer, the people wanted single payer. He could have used an executing order to do it. NOW THAT OUR GOVERNMENT IS SHUT DOWN THE REPUBLICANS GAVE OBAMA A TON OF POWER.

Obama has a responsibility to maintain order and safety for everyone. That means keeping us healthy, making sure services continue etc.

I think the "death panel" meme made him look "nazi-like' in the eyes of conservatives. imo he didn't want to appear to far left, I could be wrong.

But

The ACA, will be tweaked over the years and improved. Basically as people see the how it works and is cheaper, they will move from private to the exchange. Eventually to cut costs I HOPE a public option will evolve, and will eventually crowd out private insurance.
I think the Republicans know this already and thats why they are fighting so hard against this. I think Obama knows this will evolve into a "public option' as well.

I could be wrong of course, hope not!
