The last government shutdown, in song lyrics from the Billboard 12/16/1995 charts
"One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men was the #1 song on the December 16, 1995 Billboard Hot 100 chart issued the day the government last shut down.
I wonder what the Boyz II Men singers are doing nowadays, as Mariah has still been successful in her music career and recently joined
American Idol. This is how long it's been since the government actually shut down. Pretty ironic for the most popular song in the country to have in the chorus " I know eventually we'll be together one sweet day" when Clinton and Gingrich were feuding so much at the time.
Here's the rest of the Top 10 songs from 12/16/1995, the day the last government shutdown began. Speaking of #5, "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio, isn't Congress pretty much gangsta's paradise thanks to Citizens United? Some fitting lyrics from this song to describe the average member of Congress: "Power in the money, money in the power/Minute after minute, hour after hour...They say I gotta learn/But nobody's here to teach me/If they can't understand it, how can they reach me?" Listen:
Even more fitting lyrics, the #5 song on the
Hot Modern Rock chart on 12/16/95 (the chart is now "Alternative Songs"
, "Wonderwall" by Oasis because of lyrics like "Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you/By now you should've somehow realized what you gotta do...There are many things that I would like to say to you/But I don't know how"
For a more upbeat nostalgic look back at December 1995, here's the #10 song on the Hot 100, "Runaway" by Janet Jackson:
Or turn it up with the #1 song on the Modern Rock chart, Glycerine by Bush (no relation to the crummy presidents)
Or the #2 song after that "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" by Smashing Pumpkins
