(27,137 posts)...but the radiation from Fukushima is already out there and more coming every minute. So the radiation/accumulation statistics they give are based upon various end-points starting from the date of the initial release on March 11, 2011. It doesn't address what is constantly being added nor for how long it will be added, because that's an unknown.
The continuous releases at Fukushima are aerial coming directly from the reactor buildings themselves from time to time (corium on the move?). From groundwater leaks which end up in the reactor building basements or the sea. The curious boiling seas from the apparent mixing of radioactive material directly into the ocean. And the indirect release of captured radioactive water into the ocean via leaking tanks.
And to top it all off so that nobody's excluded, evaporation of these radioactive liquids from any and all these sources allow the dried particulates to be blown inland from sea and storm winds, contaminating everything in its path -- all the way up into the mountains. Where it will at once find its way into the mountain water the people there have used for centuries for drinking -- hundreds of kilometers away from Fukushima.
- One must assume that it will act similarly once the plume of C137 reaches the shores of America and Canada.

(8,821 posts)We should still begin decommissioning our nuclear plants at once, before we have our own Fukushima. Allowing even one more such event would be unforgivable.

(8,821 posts)As to the reactors at Fukushima: That ship seems to have already sailed.

(27,137 posts)A meltdown is when it's still inside the reactor core. They don't know where the corium is except to point down at the ground. Some are already proposing that the whole Fukushima plant be covered in concrete.
So now we finally see the Grand Backup Plan - Plan ''B'' -- the one the entirety of the nuclear industry is dependent upon if all else fails. Which it's beginning to seem like it's a certainty to do so.
- In a nutshell, here's the whole Six-Point Formula for building a nuclear plant:
1. Build a nuke plant.
2. Make a mistake.
3. Dig a hole.
4. Bury mistake.
5. Cover with concrete.
6. Repeat, as needed.

(12,121 posts)No wonder our news stopped following the fallout and tried to minimize our concerns.
I didn't know a lot of this information about Cesium 137.
DeSwiss
(27,137 posts)Nor even a reasonable facsimile of news. We have ''Corporate News'' with a copious supply of ''Corporate Commercials'' sprinkled-in liberally, with occasional snippets of gossip and going's-on that passes for news.
Which is all about which celebrity is in rehab, which one was arrested/killed/DUI'd/nudied/selfied/crashed/nipped/slipped and/or farted. Oh, and !TERRA, TERRA!, TERRAZ! di Muzloms isa comin' but don't worry the gubmint got cho back! Hurray for WAR!!! Now a few words from our sponsor, Halliburton.
- We have the means. And we'll have to continue to inform ourselves. That's the only way we'll know what the hell is going on.....

(5,198 posts)instead of foreign wars, BOTH efforts would benefit humankind. The best way for an American recovery would be a WPO program to modernize our electrical grid and infrastructure.
It is natural for people to go into a state of denial when faced with the worst information-- they ridicule it, and laugh it off-- no one wants to deal with this, but someone has to.
There are only some people that can be surgeons, others soldiers, and only some people are cut out to be first responders-- and this is the same thing. Only some people will be able to face this work on nuclear decommissioning, but it must be done.
DeSwiss
(27,137 posts)...to expect the existing system to get us there is unrealistic. It is the capitalistic/fascist system we live under that has caused these wars as the rich battle each other for supremacy of wealth and power. We the people get caught in the gears of their war machines to lubricate it.
But their monetary system has gone kaput. It has reached its imaginary top but no one wants to recognize the truth of it. So they just keep printing more money and more money and more money because no one can stop them.
There are countless examples of new energy sources that are almost free and readily available but hardly any of them depend upon being metered from a grid or from a pump. That is their problem. Because they're energy vampires and they need to suck our money from us some kind of way. So they need a system that keeps a line connected from our wallets to them, as in the days of old.
- But the new technologies demonstrate quite clearly that grids are passe'. So the only way they think they can keep their power, is to reduce the threat(s) to it. That's the plan that's going on right now in Syria....

(5,198 posts)yesterday I had one left, and today I don't know... The 1% PTB obviously have a very high tolerance for trading collateral damage for ultimate control.
Thank you DeSwiss- I agree with your response.

(27,137 posts)....for the head of the EPA. And the NRC is even further into denial about all thing nuclear. No one in the government's allowed to say bad things about nuclear energy because nuclear energy has a frail grip on reality as it is. The truth about Fukushima would send it over the edge.
- So I'd say look for even less: 20% RadNet Monitors Down

(10,056 posts)could you imagine several plants with multiple reactor failures?
Unbelievable that there are those that still argue that these facilities are safe and environmentally friendly.
DeSwiss
(27,137 posts)Unfortunately, I can. Particularly in a seismically active country like Japan that relies heavily on nuclear power.
Even though they have all that free geothermal energy right under their feet, they don't exploit it as much as they could. But then neither do we. Because it's enough to power the whole world.

(8,267 posts)I now understand why the pro-nuke sycophants insisted that the radiation from this "crisis" was equivalent to what I might ingest from eating a banana. How bizarre!
I hope more people will watch this presentation, so that they might understand becquerels, curies, and millisieverts. I think it's essential to know that Cesium-137 bio-accumulates in heart tissue, the thyroid, the gastro-intestinal tract, and the liver. I think more people should be aware that 45% of the children living in grossly contaminated areas around Chernobyl have serious illnesses, cataracts, and other radiation-induced anomalies. I think we MUST KNOW that each nuclear power plant on this planet has stored massive quantities of radioactive waste containing Cesium-137--enough to contaminate the entire planet many times over.
Fukushima has become our wake-up call. We can make it our opportunity to stop using radioactive materials. We simply cannot afford to continue this madness.
