It could be the audience is expiring, instead of being overtaken by technology.
As much as I hate to say it (because it describes myself), is the demographic of the republicans mostly the survivors of the cold war? The paranoia instilled into everyday life continues until today. We have replaced the Soviets with the Muslims as the foe de jur, but the number of people buying into the new cold war is far less than the anti-commie cold war.
