Related: About this forumUSA: EXCLUSIVE Crashed US drone explodes on Florida highway
Florida was the site of drone crash Wednesday as the unmanned aircraft experienced problems during take-off. The crash led to an explosion and closed US 98 Highway, near Tyndall Air Base. The model of drone is believed to be a QF-4. The drone contains a self-destruct mechanism, which if activated could cause significant damage. Hence, the closing of the highway.
Plumes of black smoke were seen for miles around as locals reported an airplane crash. This is the second such incident within the last few weeks, another QF-4 was self-destructed over the Gulf of Mexico following issues on a routine flight.
The QF-4 is a drone modified from the F-4 Phantom II, a jet that has been developed by the US airforce since the 1960s. The supersonic jet was the most popular and widely developed US jet, that saw action in many combat zones, including Vietnam and the six-day war.
No injuries have been reported due to the incident.

(9,070 posts)Oh well, since every phone and computer is recording us right now, I guess a drone or two don't matter.
(BTW, the country bumpkin who shot down this drone claims he was in fear of his life, so he can't be prosecuted)!!

(449 posts)This isn't a modern drone, but rather a retired Vietnam-era fighter jet that has been rigged to fly "robotic suicide missions" because the plane is used for live-fire target practice by real fighter jets.

A tad bit disturbing that they'd do this anywhere near civilians, if true.

(10,597 posts)A million apiece? If it is the same kind as the fly-in in Mika's reply above, it sure doesn't look like the drones we've all seen before.

(54,256 posts)If not used as drones they'd be parked in the AZ or CA desert.
About the only cost is the refitting with 'remote control' electronics.

(10,597 posts)... (In Pakistan and Yemen, etc.,) don't those go for a $Million bucks a pop?

(54,256 posts)I think we've sold them more expensive newer aircraft.
But I really don't know.

(10,597 posts)Not the drones we sold another government. I'm talking about the drones that are based over there, but run remotely from stateside.
