Under Chamberlin's watch, HOME settled a landmark lawsuit against Nationwide Insurance in 2000; the $12.5 million settlement allowed HOME to set up an endowment to fund its programs.
The suit, based on an investigation that began in 1996, alleged that Nationwide declined to provide homeowners insurance in primarily black neighborhoods or charged significantly higher rates in those neighborhoods. Timothy M. Kaine, who at the time of the settlement served as Richmond's mayor, was the lead attorney.
Steve Northup, immediate past chairman of the HOME board and a senior counsel with Troutman Sanders, said Chamberlin has led HOME to become the pre-eminent housing organization in the country.
"HOME has taken on very controversial cases under her leadership," he said. "Connie has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of citizens in the Richmond area."
