The results were inevitably both hysterical and disturbing, recalling an even less-informed version of the Funny or Die classic Drunk History (now a new series on Comedy Central). These kids dont know why we celebrate the 4th of July, who America gained independence from or what year it happened. They even had trouble coming up with how many stars and stripes are on the American flag.
If these kids represent the future of America, we have a lot more to worry about than the IRS or the NSA.

(36,974 posts)United States Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the 13 American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. Instead they formed a union that would become a new nationthe United States of America. John Adams was a leader in pushing for independence, which was unanimously approved on July 2. A committee had already drafted the formal declaration, to be ready when congress voted on independence.
Adams persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to compose the original draft of the document, which congress would edit to produce the final version. The Declaration was ultimately a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. The national birthday, the Independence Day is celebrated on July 4, although Adams wanted July 2.
After ratifying the text on July 4, Congress issued the Declaration of Independence in several forms. ... -snip-

(55,147 posts)Longer answer is:
In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fired in salute, once at morning and once again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.
In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.

(129,440 posts)believes that the Declaration was signed in Washington, D.C. or Boston. Even many travel writers glowingly focus yearly on celebrations everywhere but the Declaration's origin city (my home city).

(20,776 posts)I mean, I totally see how our American education system is now a days, and that many schools just focus on just passing tests..but this is just pathetic! What are they teaching in schools these days?

(7,968 posts)It is that the kids don't think it is relevant so they don't pay attention. (I make this observation as a teacher of teenagers.)

(20,776 posts)Kids have to want to learn. I hated math in high school, and barely got by, but I loved art class and often hung out in the art room long after school was over, picking up extra techniques in drawing from my teachers.

They also believe we fought WWIII already.

(6,891 posts)know stuff like that so they can pass a test. Native citizens, especially young ones, are either getting fucked up or invading Wall Street. That's not so bad.
