Hilarious (And Terrifying): Drunk College Kids Know Almost Nothing About Independence Day (NSFW)

From the about section on YouTube: I approached people asking to interview them about the Fourth of July for a funny YouTube video. I just selected the funny responses / clips. I wouldn't take any of the interviews at face value, probably quite a few were tongue-in-cheek responses. I was out filming for hours, and I didn't think making a video where a bunch of people answer these questions correctly (which there were plenty) would be particularly interesting or entertaining. Thanks to everyone who let me interview them, they were all great sports!

The results were inevitably both hysterical and disturbing, recalling an even less-informed version of the Funny or Die classic “Drunk History” (now a new series on Comedy Central). These kids don’t know why we celebrate the 4th of July, who America gained independence from or what year it happened. They even had trouble coming up with how many stars and stripes are on the American flag.

If these kids represent the future of America, we have a lot more to worry about than the IRS or the NSA.

United States Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the 13 American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. Instead they formed a union that would become a new nation—the United States of America. John Adams was a leader in pushing for independence, which was unanimously approved on July 2. A committee had already drafted the formal declaration, to be ready when congress voted on independence.

Adams persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to compose the original draft of the document, which congress would edit to produce the final version. The Declaration was ultimately a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. The national birthday, the Independence Day is celebrated on July 4, although Adams wanted July 2.

After ratifying the text on July 4, Congress issued the Declaration of Independence in several forms. ... -snip-

Longer answer is:

In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fired in salute, once at morning and once again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.

In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.

elementary school kids know in my area that the 4th of July is the United States' birthday!

Now the Declaration of Independent is any other story and where it was signed too.

I mean, I totally see how our American education system is now a days, and that many schools just focus on just passing tests..but this is just pathetic! What are they teaching in schools these days?

It is that the kids don't think it is relevant so they don't pay attention. (I make this observation as a teacher of teenagers.)

Kids have to want to learn. I hated math in high school, and barely got by, but I loved art class and often hung out in the art room long after school was over, picking up extra techniques in drawing from my teachers.

They found out most kids think WWII was where we fought against the Commie Russians,...and Germany was on our side.

They also believe we fought WWIII already.

know stuff like that so they can pass a test. Native citizens, especially young ones, are either getting fucked up or invading Wall Street. That's not so bad.
