(6,335 posts)The Hutterites which have commune colonies all over the US. They share almost everything on the farm. They have a large common building where they all live with rooms for each family and a common kitchen. They share all the most modern farming equipment and machinery. They are such good farmers as a result of this that they usually buy out all their neighbor farms eventually. Their colony splits when they reach about 100 or so.
I visited one in the middle of rural Washington state once and it was quite impressive. They showed me around and were very nice people.
But as Thom Hartmann says, pure communism can only work at low population levels like this, where everybody knows each other personally. After 150 people it becomes increasingly out of control as thats the maximum number of people you can know personally.

(3,991 posts)As some one who's worked with real disabled people on one hand and seen welfare parasites on the other, I think if we could find a way to localise welfare intelligently it would do a world of good: If people could see the real disabled people their money was personally feeding, there would be no complaints, and they'd feel great about all they do. On the other hand, if people learned of welfare parasites collecting SSI while living off the taxpayers, they would be pariahs, instead of the status quo, where it seems an abstract crime against the distant "government" instead of against you and I, and they get left alone.

(564 posts)No, no, no. How many of us want to live in China? Or the former Soviet Union? Romania? Stalin's atrocities were on the level of Germany and Hitler (Godwin!) and lasted far longer, yet for some reason is not as well known.

(8,812 posts)Concentrating wealth and power into the hands of a few, whether they be private or public, is a bad idea. Always.

(35,320 posts)But as soon as it's run by the state and not voluntarily, it's not Xianity.
It's purely secular.
However, it's a nice touch, trying to make it a matter of religious importance to support a social system that is purely secular, esp. given the importance on this board of the separation of church and state. "Mustn't let the church interfere with the state ... unless it suits me."
Lunacharsky redux.

(460 posts)Most people can't interpret the bible well enough comment on it. With that said don't be quick to judge or put me into a bottle and put it on the shelf. Just because I do not agree with you doesn't make you right. Religion and politics should not mix. Jesus said give to Caesar what is Caesar give to God what is of God. But Perry is crazy.
