Still smoke. I am not dead. I don't look like that either. If I die in my 60s (now am), 70s, or even 80s, would stopping prevent one from dying at these ages?????? We are all going to die at these ages from SOMETHING.

I lost my wife a year ago, from lung cancer. The type of cancer was clearly a direct result of her smoking. She was well aware of this while she was dying. To put it clearly, if she hadn't smoked, she would almost certainly still be alive. I am happy for you, but I miss her terribly.

My dad didn't. Died in his early 60's. Otherwise healthy, except the throat/lung cancer.
Never met his first grandson.

Them's the breaks. Some get lucky, some do not.

She smokes while she has her granddaughter near, so that the baby gets second-hand smoke. This does not seem to be an issue for her. She has asserted that she will "die with a cigarette in her hand." She is angrily and defensively opposed to any discussion of second-hand smoke issues. She does make her smoking friends go outside to smoke if she knows I'm going to visit, since I'm dreadfully sensitive to nicotine.

in decades. Very used to smoking outside all the time, even in my own home. My husband quit in his 20s. He has very poor health despite this. 5 surgeries in 4 years. He is going this week to have his 3rd stent put in. What can I say? He is obese. I smoke. I think I would much rather just drop dead one day than have to go through all that he has; constant worrying about his aches, pains, dying, an entire drawer full of pills, this procedure, that surgery, etc. I would not want to live like that. Other people may disagree but I would rather die younger and be active (which I am), than live longer as an invalid.

I bet her PSA has shocked many into quitting.

For that, she should be thanked many times over
