Warning: contains graphic video of animals being skinned alive.
What do you get when you combine pageant winners with animal-rights activists? Well, in this case, four beautiful women willing to take it off in the name of going fur-free.
Former Miss USA winners Susie Castillo, Shandi Finnessey, Shanna Moakler, and Alyssa Campanella are the latest celebs to strip down for PETAs Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur campaign. Not only are all four women animal lovers, but theyre trying to send a message to the pageant industry: Fur is not beautiful.
Castillo got the ball rolling by recruiting the others to the cause. The reason I wanted to get involved with PETA is because Ive been an animal lover all my life and the more I learned of the torture that animals go through in the name of fashion I thinks its just so unnecessary. Its unbelievable to me, actually. So I thought, if theres something I could do to get my fellow pageant sisters together and for us to take a stand, united and to tell the pageant industry not to support the fur industry. I feel so blessed that they all agreed.
In the video below, they all tell stories about being awarded fur as prizes. In fact, as part of her reign, Finnessey was asked to wear a fur coat and sign autographs for the Trappers Association, where members brought in photo albums of trapped animals.
Im looking at these pictures where animals are gnawing through their own paws in order to free themselves from traps and theyre trying these desperate measures just to fight for their lives. I was so disgusted that I would wear the skin of this living being on my body and consider myself beautiful. What would happen if that happened to a human being? We would be outraged. So whats the difference? she says.

I'm a vegetarian, but I loathe this group. They're Palin-esque in their starvation for attention.

(17,301 posts)Capitalism can NOT survive if everyone were treated equally.
The fact that you find objectification so unremarkable is telling in of itself.

(2,479 posts)We're all objects--living, breathing objects, yes. But we're not ONLY objects. I don't view the picture, seeing the lovely ladies and think "objects, only objects."
Like he said, it's up to them, and at least it's for a good purpose.

(1,239 posts)should use male models as well, since a lot of fur is worn by women.
anything to end the disgusting torture of animals is worth it.

On edit, also i am also pretty sure is many a dolled up woman would get offended if they got ignored. Of course, as a man i have no complaint, they deserve to get noticed, it's is obviously a heck of a lot work to getting to looking that way

(12,882 posts)What guy (or gal?) wouldn't want to take a gander? I personally think PETA's zealousness is over the top. But I really don't care. I do wish PETA would come here and school me as to how I'm supposed to dispatch or dissuade the seige of pocket gophers that ravage our garden every year.

Fellow DU'ers, the few non-posed 'wardrobe mishaps' were mostly airbrushed.
So feel free to view, even for the Progressive Puritans

(7,261 posts)What have the armchair critics done lately?
Is skinning animals alive for their hides preferable to "objectifying" women or any number of other excuses to cluck about PETA and their ads?

(14,175 posts)There always seems to be a horde of anti-PETA crusaders who seem to hate PETA for bizarre petty reasons in comparison to the awareness that PETA brings to this issue.
There seems to be some confusion with the idea of women using their natural beauty to get attention to an important issue that they themselves care about and are not making $ on. That this is the same thing as using their beauty to sell a soda pop or jeans for a large corporation.
