(22,757 posts)I think "Up With Chris Hayes" is becoming one of the best 'political talk shows' on TV... real conversation with complete thoughts and sentences..
and yes, Maggie Gallagher was a 'bit defensive' this morning... highlights the immense divide between them and us and makes me very sad...

(12,233 posts)and if you don't have the socio-economic means to "raise a child" as a single parent, then is nauseating miserable at times.. The fear alone of one income and spreading oneself out in 100 different directions is bone numbing and will break people. She's broken. She needs healing. She needs a kind, caring govt that actually helps its people. She needs healing, compassion and someone with a brain to reach her. She seems reachable if you know how to speak to her. Her pain is the single mom, no husband, and no freaking help in the endless circle of worry and fret over bills and trying to provide that "American Dream" for her child. I could see that. Its too bad the rest of the panel couldn't see that she's in pain and her pain is poisoning the world. She probably doesn't even really understand why she's against gay marriage, other than it was a band wagon the church ladies jumped on and it made her feel good to be in charge of something, since she has so little control over her own life.

(57,936 posts)It's hard to raise a child even if you are a two-parent family when you are poor. It's just so hard.

(12,233 posts)Deep down this woman is more scarred from being a single mother in probably a lower economic status with some dead-beat "dad" who wasn't around than anything else. Had there been a society in which raising her child alone and on a single-mom salary, then she may have not turned onto the whole marriage and mom/ dad raising children issue. She turned to religion because society wasn't there to catch her. She has deep feelings of regret, guilt, and true bitterness that she was stuck as a single mom with little to no help.
What if she had a "national daycare" structure she could have turned to. What if when women joined men in the work force and sent 2 parent's out to work, the number of "full time" hrs at a living wage were reduced to 30 hrs so that parents could be parents. What if she had the resources to educate herself in college without still having to worry how to pay for a roof over her head, daycare, and food on the table? And could you imagine the stress relief if this country had single-payer health care and that she didn't have to worry about illness or the cost of an illness for her or her child.. Or that if she had that single-payer health care, perhaps, she would have put herself on the pill and waited until she was ready to care for a child in a loving, stable relationship when it was time. Could you imagine how different her life would have been had our govt been more benevolently socialist? I doubt she'd be sitting on some panel against gay marriage or Defense of Marriage schtick. I guess if she couldn't be happy, no one should? Maybe had her deck of cards fallen a different way, she'd be a co-founder of Defense of Birth Control or something like that... Her jealousy of the black woman was just glaringly obvious.
What was it Pres. Obama said, when govt fails, and economic woes set, people turn to God and guns because there is nothing else to rely on but faith.. something like that... AND it made sense. If you have nothing, the only thing left is a mythic being in a sky and hoping heaven is better than the hell on earth one is living? I always think, we can do better than this. Petty bickering is going no where. We need people with vision to lead and see the bigger picture and people who play petty politics for their own gain are ruining this country.

(22,757 posts)I grew up with a mother just like that and it could just as easily been me... petty bickering is the result of fear and anger for some.. frustration for others...
and it is a very vicious cycle

(7,875 posts)"Terminology issue"? Nice. So what in her mind is "marriage equality"? I'd love to hear her definition.
