The state of Washington just legalized same-sex marriage. One state at a time,

(25,183 posts)I shall toast Rep. Walsh with a Walla Walla Valley cabernet at the next possible dinner occasion. I lived 37 years in WA state, and I remember the relative civility in politics in that state. Rep. Walsh carries on in that tradition.

(24,634 posts)The argument this woman made is the only argument needed to be made in regards to same sex marriages. Not that it would matter.
As an aside if she's a republican, I sincerely doubt she agrees with the majority of our issues. One issue is not what is needed to get someone to switch sides.
it certainly begs the question, "how much do we have in common with our fellow Republicans?" Perhaps, if we highlighted our commonalities and built on those, rather than indulging in divisiveness and name-calling ('rethugs' and the like), we could accomplish something...

(24,634 posts)There is rampant racism seeming to be bursting out of the Republican side, not to mention the sexism of some---particularly by women in the R side. I have yet to see many Republicans really willing to look past differences to common ideas.

(8,267 posts)that's when we can accept the challenge of Satyagraha.
Our youth are waking up about the oppression inherent in radical income inequity. The lies of the sociopathic Corporate Aristocracy will not hold when so many of the Hoi Polloi are unable to meet even their most basic needs.

(2,485 posts)Many people will swear they're Conservatives, but when you ask them if they want to get rid of their medicare, their social security, etc., they're really more liberal than they think. Sometimes it's just the way you phrase it. I like to think they are "Conservative in general and liberal in specific".

(2,485 posts)much thought into all of this other than to watch Faux News and repeat what they're told. Most people don't research anything before believing what they first hear. They get Faux News soundbytes, and scary emails, and that's enough proof for them. Some of them are really decent people who are being misled.

(4,919 posts)I choked up at the exact moment when Representative Maureen Walsh (R) braced herself and held her chin up with sincere pride before saying the words... "My daughter came out of the closet a couple of years ago"... with such honesty and love. With that, she gave her daughter the gift of a lifetime... I am sure her daughter will replay this YouTube clip over and over again for many years to come.
