The CMMG kits are for semi autos, not selective fire. Perfectly legal.

The lower receiver is what is serialized. The rest are addons to make the rifle what you want it to be.

I have not seen a true drop in auto sear in decades, something about the 1981 BATF actions followed by 1986 ban. Current BATF design requirements makes easy mods almost impossible. An example of that is the difference between the A and B model of the Uzi carbine.

However, as you have pointed out, these are durable goods. The parts are available, the skills not out of reach. YouTube videos abound these days that demonstrate -- prefaced with all the reasons why it must not ever be done lest agents break down your door.

But, again as you've noted, as a community it's not well known for unquestioning compliance to laws that are difficult to enforce -- such as what you do in your own basement with legally purchased tools and parts.
