It was hilarious but relayed some very important ideas as well that we never see on corporate media.

From Molly Ivins' 1993 essay "Taking a Stab at Our Infatuation with Guns" (The Seattle Times, March 15, 1993):

Let me start this discussion by pointing out that I am not anti-gun. I'm pro-knife. Consider the merits of the knife. In the first place, you have catch up with someone in order to stab him. A general substitution of knives for guns would promote physical fitness. We'd turn into a whole nation of great runners. Plus, knives don't ricochet. And people are seldom killed while cleaning their knives. As a civil libertarian, I of course support the Second Amendment. And I believe it means exactly what it says: "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Fourteen-year-old boys are not part of a well-regulated militia. Members of wacky religious cults are not part of a well-regulated militia. Permitting unregulated citizens to have guns is destroying the security of this free state. I am intrigued by the arguments of those who claim to follow the judicial doctrine of original intent. How do they know it was the dearest wish of Thomas Jefferson's heart that teen-age drug dealers should cruise the cities of this nation perforating their fellow citizens with assault rifles? Channelling?

the newspaper industry (now everywhere run amok, aka Bain) and the Justice Department's approval, in a way that no one would blink about, let alone think about, these days. So very, very sad. She was one of the last voices of reason prior to her death.

I think the professor was fond of her and Molly's viewpoint kept the students interested. John would come home, quote Molly Ivins and we would start laughing.

You just sent me on a 2 hour tour of one of my favorite columnists. I won't get those two hours back but who cares? I laughed my ass of. I think even if I didn't live in Washington State, I probably would still have laughed my ass off.

SunSeeker posted her opinion on gun control below, in which she brought a viewpoint that is much more fresh and intelligent than our current media which only repeats slogans. She was cognizant of the big picture and not fooled by the conservatives.

I'll never forget her handshake or her smile that sunny day as she walked up to us in the park. Our governor truly rejoiced being in the company of fellow progressive Democrats. She won re-election easily that year. It was heartbreaking when the Shrub and his cronies took over.
