1. At least in Chicago healthy eating is not a class race thing as suggested in the film:

there are health food restaurants on the south side and west side of the city and there are a few vegetarian Mexican restaurants. Chicago and the burbs seem to be having an explosion of healthy choices other than fast food:

Guess what, no one forced me to eat at any of these restaurants. But, on occasion, I do.

scrambled eggs from McD. when i lived in new york city we had a McD that served fresh orange juice. i'd occasionally stop before work and bring the juice, eggs and a biscuit to the office.

new york city also had a place called roy rogers which had decent hamburgers. was surprised when i moved to phoenix that we didn't have one here.

3. so according to this 'comedian' it is all a big conspiracy
Mon Apr 1, 2013, 05:43 PM
Apr 2013

Morgan Spurlock, the CDC, all of the major media, private scientists, private organizations, on and on. All of these in one big tight conspiracy against the poor, fast food purveyors of the world.

He alleges both that Morgan Spurlock did not eat what he showed he ate in "Supersize Me", and that Spurlock ate 5,000 calories.

Also alleged in this unfunny mess is:
- meat is good for you. you should eat more of it
- vegetarians are radicals
- if you disagree with his crock-umentary then you are brain washed

This film is total bullshit and the guy is not even a good liar.

Was the assertion that if you don't eat meat it makes you weak...
but honestly I did not watch the whole pile of shit...just cut it off at the meat makes you strong part...and I am not a vegetarian...just don't like bullshit.
But you can bet that the fast food industry loved it.

12. To me what the guy did in FatHead was first claim that Fast food was perfectly okay
Tue Apr 2, 2013, 08:28 AM

and there is no obesity epidemic and that Morgan Spurlock cheated but then he proceeds to pursue a low carb diet composed of fast food and increase his exercise level to 6x weekly.

So he didn't prove that Spurlock was wrong or that fast food is health-neutral, only that low carb and exercise is an effective way to limit weight gain. He spends 80% of this long winded film demonizing and straw manning and many people come away with completely the wrong idea here.

Fast food's business model is built around soda and cheap carbs. So much so that Pepsi owned Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut at one time. So to say fast food is okay IF you don't drink the sodas or eat the fries (or, to follow-up, eat the GMO wheat in the buns of the burgers) is disingenuous.

I am not sure he ever claimed fast food was perfectly okay. I got the impression he was saying it's Ok once or twice a week. He was eating all the fast food to undercut the arguments of the Super-size me movie which really was poorly done. As he said, 5,000 calories of anything will make you fat. You are exactly right about fast foods being built around carbs though which would undercut his argument about fast foods but it also perhaps is the main reason there are more heavy people around since the FDA came up with those guidelines. Too many carbs.

The only thing that can prove Spurlock was wrong is more peer-review science which seems to slowly be coming in these days. The study of cholesterol in European countries, the UCLA study and the Norway study: http://www.naturalnews.com/033975_high_cholesterol_heart_attacks.html

I know one person does not make a scientific sample but my Dad who is 94 years old right now and has had high cholesterol all his life turns out has perfectly clean arteries. In his early 80's they had him on lipitor for a while to lower his cholesterol and then he lost his ability to walk which is strange because he was a runner even in his 70's. Both his brothers who are also in their 90's walk great and also have high cholesterol but never took statins. I simply have not heard anything good about statins and there was NO reason for my Dad to be on them since his arteries turned out to be completely clean. I don't know if the lipitor caused him to lose the ability to walk but it is listed as a side effect. Snip right from lipitor's website: Muscle problems. LIPITOR can cause muscle problems like weakness, tenderness, or pain that happen without a good reason, especially if you also have a fever or feel more tired than usual. This may be an early sign of a rare muscle problem. http://www.lipitor.com/aboutlipitor/sideeffects.aspx Clearly the high cholesterol didn't hurt him at all with 65 years of it and clean arteries.

Cutting back on refined sugars is a key to all diets..yet..many people are addicted to them.
That is what Moss's book is about, "Sugar Salt Fat How the Food Giants Hooked You.

More and more research is backing up what he says about high cholesterol not being a problem and things like grains flooding the body with sugar. As he pointed out the National Academy of Sciences didn't want anything to do with the "low fat / cholesterol" diet being pushed back then because the science wasn't there. You don't want to go overboard with fats but you don't want to cut them too low. Also, the human diet is NOT use to too much vegetable oil. We evolved for hundreds of thousand's of years without it and now we are eating too much and the human body hasn't developed a way to deal with it yet. Maybe if we keep eating it eventually the body will evolve so it's more healthy. It's possible all the very low fat diets are starving kids brains of oils they need causing things like ADD. Also statin drugs are BAD NEWS!

11. Except that some research is showing that the Mediterranean diet is good for you
Tue Apr 2, 2013, 04:40 AM
Apr 2013
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mediterranean-diet/CL00011

From the study at The New England Journal of Medicine:

The traditional Mediterranean diet is characterized by a high intake of olive oil, fruit, nuts, vegetables, and cereals; a moderate intake of fish and poultry; a low intake of dairy products, red meat, processed meats, and sweets; and wine in moderation, consumed with meals.1 In observational cohort studies2,3 and a secondary prevention trial (the Lyon Diet Heart Study),4 increasing adherence to the Mediterranean diet has been consistently beneficial with respect to cardiovascular risk.2-4 A systematic review ranked the Mediterranean diet as the most likely dietary model to provide protection against coronary heart disease.5 Small clinical trials have uncovered plausible biologic mechanisms to explain the salutary effects of this food pattern.6-9 We designed a randomized trial to test the efficacy of two Mediterranean diets (one supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and another with nuts), as compared with a control diet (advice on a low-fat diet), on primary cardiovascular prevention

In conclusion, in this primary prevention trial, we observed that an energy-unrestricted Mediterranean diet, supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts, resulted in a substantial reduction in the risk of major cardiovascular events among high-risk persons. The results support the benefits of the Mediterranean diet for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

14. It's a high fat diet

High intake of olive oil, nuts. http://healthimpactnews.com/2013/study-high-fat-mediterranean-diet-better-for-heart-than-low-fat-diet/

Pretty much the point the guy was making. Fats are supposed to be consumed sparingly on the FDA's food pyramid the mediterranean diet is saying it's ok to eat a high fat diet.

Also as this person points out the real Mediterranean diet is not what is often advertised:

Snip>

the just got it really wrong with the so called med. diet! i used to live in tuscany (italy) and spend a lots of holidays in spain, france... (iam swiss) and they do not eat that much grains at all. in italy for example they eat pasta, but it is only a starter, a small plate, far from what we are used to get in Italian restaurants. but they also have a primo what is mostly cured meats, fish or liverpate, followed by a main course of meat and vegetables. in italien supermarkets for example you hardly find canned food or microwave menus...

in france they eat a lots of animal fats (beef, duck, goose) and full fat dairy, in spain a lots of fish, meats and olive oil.

i would say a real med. diet is very near to paleo except for eating some grains. but there diet is full of fresh meat & fish and animal fats, lots of fresh vegetables (organic), full fat dairy and some starch: potatoes, pulses and grains. with a very difference in preparation (soaking and slow cooking for example!)

I see mixed reviews as to whether whole grains cause inflammation but this study seems to say it does: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2821887/

15. The first minute and 12 seconds are lies.....here is why.
Wed Apr 3, 2013, 08:30 AM

The author says..it took hours to get those pictures of really fat people...

In February I was visiting a beach in Florida's west cost..near Sarasota. just walking down the beach..I was amazed at the number of really fat people I saw at the beach in a half hour.I estimated that 30 percent were really fat, and 60 to 70 percent were really and clearly overweight..that included the three of us walking down the beach, although I am now only about 12 pounds overweight, while the two I was walking with are 50 to 60 overweight.
I was really fat once and got down, but his original thesis, and then I shut it off, was there really aren't that many. I was struck by how many I saw that day. I counted maybe ten percent who were thin. It was totally unscientifc but what else is new. There is an obesity epidemic in this country and lots of people are overweight.

17. Everyone has their little pet diets.

Low carb, Low sugar, low fats.

His silly show was about restricting his intake of calories. Yes, we all know Supersize Me was an unscientific poke at the fast food industry and McDonald but was very fun to watch. He was somewhat scientific and very boring to watch.

Here's the thing, take out a whole food group from your diet and you will lose weight. It can be any food group, just pick one. But after a while you get use to the diet and you will start to gain weight again as you compensate for the missing food group by eating more of the other food groups.

The solution is to find something that works for you. He has found something that works for him (his kids are probably simply very conscious of food intake and make healthier food choices.). I personally can never live a life without eating good homemade bread. It would be like giving up eating for me to give up my bread. And when I went on a low carb diet, I was depressed and bored with food and barely lasted 2 weeks on the diet.

So, I now eat all the bread I want but I eat salads, lots and lots of salads because I like them and I grow my own veggies and they are pesticide and chemical free and delicious. It works for me but probably wouldn't work for him or someone who is not particularly fond of bread or salads. To each his own. Just keep trying until you find the combination that work for you.
