Conservatives At Anti-Gay Marriage Rally Undercut One Of Their Primary Talking Points

WASHINGTON, DC — Nearly a decade ago, the recent debate over marriage equality entered the limelight when, in May 2004, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts ruled that the state’s prohibition on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

In the years since, conservatives have argued that marriage equality is a “threat” to marriage between straight couples.

ThinkProgress asked attendees an anti-equality rally in Washington DC today about what impact same-sex marriage has had on their own marriages over the last decade. Nearly everyone was flummoxed by the idea that someone else’s marriage would pose a threat to their own. One man even noted that gay marriage has strengthened his marriage by bringing him and his wife together over the shared belief that gays and lesbians should not be allowed to wed.

1. It's incredible that we're still having this debate in 2013,

especially when there are more important issues for America to be worrying about (such as jobs). Other countries such as Canada have legalized same-sex marriage, and they don't have any problems, so there's no reason why we shouldn't follow in their footsteps. Even the wingnuts in the video said themselves that they're not getting hurt by people of the same sex loving each other.

2. Reminds me of when Ed Helms was still on the Daily Show

He went to Boston to see how gay marriage had had an effect, and he interviewed one of the biggest anti-gay bigots out there - Brian Camenker - who claimed that gay marriage would ruin American quality of life so Ed asked about air quality, etc. which just confused Brian who ultimately said that he was sure if he had the time, he could find all sorts of ways that gay marriage had affected quality of life.

4. When our same-sex couple neighbors married, it strengthened our marriage

because we were reminded of how fortunate we are to have a long, close relationship in which we share so much. We are straight. They are gay. There really is no difference whatsoever. I think they probably have a bit easier time in their marriage than we do in ours because they are of the same sex. Heterosexual marriages are, in my opinion, probably more difficult that same-sex marriages.

The more people who have rights - The harder it is for the government to take them away.

They are the ones supporting authoritarianism... They are the ones wanting to be told what to believe and say... They are the ones who owe blind allegiance to the power elite.

It's government "of, for, and by the people"...not government "of, for and by the corporatists" or "of, for, and by the religionists."

If you don't like the government, change it through democracy! It's much tougher to do when it's controlled by corporations or religions...

Which is why they go into full blown panic mode when Democrats win.

It's a joy for them to see Bush/Cheney Stormtroopers kicking in the doors of peace activists. Hell, they'd like to see Democrats face a firing squad for treason.

Maybe it'll keep him occupied. He clearly has very little to do. I vow never to let retirement shred my brain the way it has millions of other people.
