The Opportunist -- timely wisdom from Catch-22

1. I went to see the movie when it

first came out in the local theater back in 1970. That is precisely the quote I remember, "You have it backwards, 'It is better to live on your feet, than to die on you knees.'"

2. That was a great and memorable line from this great classic.

Here's a scene that stuck with me for the way Milo and Colonel Cathcart continue their conversation
walking along the side of the landing strip while a plane comes in blowing right by them, on fire, and then
after coming to a stop actually explodes into flames -- they never even bother to look over at it. I'll never
forget that scene. Here it is:

3. Great scene from a great movie.

I haven't seen the movie in years. I think I'll rent the DVD this weekend.

5. And that scene was the theme of the whole movie.

6. While making this film

someone tried to pressure Mike Nichols to speed things up. His reply was, "Don't fuck with me I have the fifth largest air force in the world." I don't recall any reports of anyone being bombed by a squadron of Mitchell Bombers so they must have backed off.

7. That's pretty funny...

...and I'm glad Nichols didn't let anybody rush him -- Catch-22 is a masterpiece.
