Need to learn to launch a BUK missile quick? Look online
WASHINGTON
No one has admitted responsibility for firing the sophisticated missile that brought down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, killing 298 people over Ukraine on July 17. But untrained rebels could probably have done it with a little practice. There are even instructions online, making it possible for nearly anyone who comes into possession of one of these systems - anywhere in the world - to use it.
Washington and Kiev both blame Russian-backed separatists from the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peoples Republic for attacking the plane with a 9k37 BUK missile system. These rebels had bragged about possessing the weapon before the attack.
The BUK is in the upper tier of the worlds antiaircraft weapons. Its considerably more advanced and has more complicated procedures to fire than point-and-shoot, shoulder-fired missiles. Its missiles can climb to an altitude of 46,000 feet at Mach 3 speeds, packing more than a 154-pound high-explosive warhead.
Separatists in eastern Ukraine have already proved adept at using less-sophisticated missiles to shoot down Ukrainian fighter jets and helicopters. This achievement alone, however, would not automatically give them the know-how to operate a BUK.

(84,711 posts)but, I still wonder about an air missile from Ukranian jet taking Flight 17 out.
We don't know which or who. So...we wait for the investigation. I just wish it wasn't GreatBritain who is decoding the black boxes. I think the Malaysians who owned the aircraft should have decoded with international observers present. And, given the difficulty of have investigators on the ground to check out the wreckage after the plane went down for so long makes it harder for them to piece together evidence. One could say that both Ukraine and the Separatists would have an interest in the site being in a war zone so that evidence couldn't be observed and collected soon enough.
The poor Ukrainians in those towns who had parts of plane and bodies that landed in trees and on an orphanage and all kinds of other places have suffered enough. And, collecting personal belongings pieces of the plane and body parts that were scattered over a huge area has made life hell for those people. They complained that there didn't seem to be anyone in charge so the people themselves had to do what they could because people were so traumatized by the rotting bodies in the heat and the other personal belongings strewed around in obvious places that were disturbing to children and others. Wall Street Journal had an interesting article that I posted here in GOOD READS with photos and interviews with the people in the towns villages where bodies, parts of the plane and personal belongings rained down after the crash.

(84,711 posts)I know it is "Wall St. Journal" so always suspect...but, still.
WHY have we had so "little info from on the Ground Sources." This article, (no matter the source) read true to me.....but then, these days....one never knows. But, that crash covered Miles and Miles of Wreckage....and yet the reports were that it all fell down in One Place....so that International Discovery was blocked. As if the plane crashed and landed in one Township so that the "SITE" could have been cordoned off.
This article says the plane broke apart and landed all over the place with bodies dropping out of sky ...and little girl's doll with embroidered "Emily" landed in a potato field and was dug up. (yeah..maybe propaganda) but, the stuff blew apart from the airline that's all over the place..or maybe not. Maybe the bodies were all neatly available in one spot.
We don't know...but, given that it's Great Britain decoding the boxes....I think we will NEVER KNOW...and we discount the Ukrainians Reports about scattered Miles Wide Wreckage...because "Ukrainians just aren't believable...because they are "Putanistas" according to USA MSM.
That's all I was saying.
