James O'Keefe's Breakthrough: memoir of a merry prankster

by Ana Marie Cox
7 July 2013

...But O'Keefe earns most of these pop culture comparisons with the aforementioned setpieces, such as a mad dash down Sixth Avenue to a Glenn Beck taping, "hard drive in hand, cords dangling, dodging cars and pedestrians both, my heart pounding, looking skyward now and then as the rain clouds gathered, and wondering if I'd live to be 26." There's also the brutal interrogation sequence, after O'Keefe is arrested for attempting to tamper with the phones of Senator Mary Landrieu:

"They took off the chains and shackles and left the handcuffs on. Pure Stockholm syndrome – I was beginning to feel grateful … My words simply did not register. His indifference was frustrating, unnerving. I could see how easy it was to break a prisoner. I was close."

The Landrieu incident and its aftermath actually undergirds most of the book's deepest purple prose, flights of rhetoric untethered by the fact that O'Keefe is perhaps the only federal prisoner in recent memory "broken" by the thought of missing out on a winter holiday:

"A nightmare day in windowless cages had shrunk my will to nothing. Plus, I had a plane to catch. I was supposed to go skiing at Tahoe..."

To get more mental torture, go to the link above. I chanced upon this because I wanted to check to see how the 'freedom and liberty' crowd were going ot respond to the verdict in Florida. The star of the radio show said race riots were being incited, and started huffing about 'Obama!!111!!'

Which didn't last long, as the breathless man doing his best lapdog impression, began his interview with the heroic O'Keefe, and sounding as if he was in the throes of ecstasy. I never heard such loving, fulsome praise bestowed on any living being. Except Reagan, perhaps.

Googling the claims that the book was on the NYT best seller list, as well as an Amazon top seller, I found it had been. Google also showed that Breitbart and Stormfront were also in the hallelujah chorus, but I didn't go there. But they aren't ras-cist, you know!

Then I found this piece in the UK's Guardian. Ms. Cox doesn't drool all over the book as the same radio star who said a few days ago that the Obama administration was doing the purge at last, clearing alltrue patriots from government!!11!! Also, we should all buy gold...

The Koch brothers just keep on winning. From 2009 > 2010, now it's 2013 > 2014, same game from all sides. Some might wonder why idiots are setting off fireworks tonight.

I'm not, though.

2. Oh, if you'd heard that radio star praising him, you'd pass out. The love and adulation was intense.

O'Keefe is doing tours for his book. Veritas is the same outfit that was paid tax dollars to have Palin come out to speak at a university in California.

Also on CSPAN:

Here's this new rightwing hero:

He's doing speaking engagements and mobilizing the troops in Maryland and New Jersey to go on the attack to 'end liberalism' just as Rush has said for years. And it's repeated so much on the net, anyone who is exposed to this thinks hating liberals is a form of godliness.

There is a lot of money behind this, very slick, people come in as if going to job seminars (and that's what they really are, they get paid for this) to train them to go out and do exactly what O'Keefe did to ACORN.

The language of the star radio host was so passionate about him, I thought it was the Second Coming. It's like the Ron Paul cult.

Sorry it was gross, but I was struck after finding out about this weasel crawling out of his hole, especially after the Koch victory today with their last few weeks of ALEC, SYG, anti-woman victories.

The RWers are very passionate about their regressive, inhumane policies. And they will be voting in 2014.
