Christian Fascism Could Happen Here
COULD IT HAPPEN HERE?
Fredrich Rich has written a book called Christian Nation. In it he posits a situation where McCain-Palin are elected in 2008. Rich points out, that before the crash and Great Recession, McCain-Palin were in a tight race with Obama-Biden. So, the book goes on to suggest what might happen if the republican ticket were elected. Hypothetically, soon after the election, McCain dies and Palin takes over as President.
She establishes a theocratic state. Rich points out that the Far Right has suggested a specific program for a Christian government. We can see what that plan is by looking at states like North Carolina where far right republicans have proposed legislation that is Christian based. In N.C. a bill was introduced in the legislature that made Christianity the official religion of the state. .

(602 posts)Look at Texas. Is that close to the theocratic state of which you post? There are millions of other examples, too obvious to even list.
White Christian Fascism possible in America? You betcha!

(602 posts)praying for the end-times, doing whatever they can to bring it about. The Christian hoardes may have to be dealt with again, right here on home turf. They are just that crazy.

They'll need a dogma/religion to keep people from objecting. Ayn Rand's crap works for some things, but selective Christianity works best for keeping people enslaved.
All the pieces are there...will they come together?

(10,749 posts)But it was actually painful to consider the thesis. And yet, it is entirely possible.
Rather than christian fascism, I think what we're seeing is more like Christian nihilism, a decline into orchestrated chaos, total chaos being one prerequisite, in the fundamentalist mind, for Christ's return and the rapture of believers. In short, they don't care about the damage they are causing because that's part of the plan, and they don't care about those left behind because they won't have to deal with it. Thus the denial of global climate change, the attacks on the neediest, etc. Call it tinfoil hattery, but this has to be a factor.

(40,416 posts)But if you want to see real party lunacy, check out the cynically named "Constitution Party". They are the real wackaloons.
But the Republicans are bad enough for me, with all their God-talk and their Stepford Wives women supporters.
Why do they do it? Because they can.

(28,784 posts)What the fuck is going on in state legislatures?
That's Christian fascism.
And, imo, what happened to Mussolini would be a fitting end for them, as well.
This is war. So far, patriots haven't fired a shot, and the Christian fascists have only the restraint of the decent people of this nation to thank for that.
If the GOP doesn't bring down these fascists, we will have a civil war.

(176 posts)about the sudden attacks on reproductive rights (I never thought that would happen, I thought social issues
were just red meat at election time), I still am pretty sure a full-blown theocracy could never happen.
Why? Simple-it would be bad for business(booze, porn, etc.). Think the corporati would stand for a ban
or even strict regulation of those things? Never...and they OWN the government.

(28,784 posts)liquor was delivered to govt. offices.
The best place to find a drink in the U.S. at that time was in the halls of the govt. that had banned it for the rest of the nation.
So, I don't think it's beyond the pale to think that the corporate state would make a deal with the theocrats to exchange votes for restrictions on "sin" commerce. You can be sure that anything a politician or rich person could want would still be available to them.
After all, prohibition made some people very rich, while giving the religious conservatives (and some women) a platform to exercise power. (Thankfully, a woman also created the social conditions to end prohibition by standing up to those women and religious zealots who wanted to continue to enforce their version of how the world should be on everyone else.)
When you have laws that attempt to control human recreational time/substances, you create an economy with jobs for those who enforce such laws, as well. We see this to this day with cannabis. Who could actually believe that more than three-quarters of a million people are arrested every year for marijuana possession, or that simple possession could lead to a life sentence in prison?
But that is the reality in the more theocratically-inclined southern states.
Prison labor at little to no cost is the next step down from right-to-work-for-less that the south has used to decimate labor jobs in the north. Theocratically-inclined states have a history of this same practice in chain gangs and, before that, slavery.
The U.S. worker now competes with a Chinese worker who is locked in a ghetto at night after working in unsafe conditions in a factory. China's economy is booming - and some are becoming rich, while others live in inhumane conditions.
But we're okay with that in the U.S. because smart phones are cheaper that way.
If it takes religion to accomplish that same cheap labor goal in the U.S., I don't doubt for a minute that those who are, for instance, currently lobbying for an end to the minimum wage would give a shit.
