The Associated Press is reporting that owners of the company formerly known as Blackwater said theyve settled a lawsuit brought by survivors and estates of Iraqis killed during an infamous Baghdad shooting in 2007, when Holland native Erik Prince was still the organization CEO.
The settlement ends the lawsuit against the security contractor, now called Academi.
Blackwater security were guarding U.S. diplomats in 2007 when they opened fire in Baghdads crowded Nisoor Square, killing 17 people, including women and children. Blackwater claimed self-defense in the incident. Prosecutors called the attack unprovoked.
Prince, a former Navy SEAL, is a Holland native whose family fortune was made in the auto parts industry. His sister, Betsy DeVos, a former chairwoman of the Michigan GOP, is married to Dick DeVos, a Republican and Amway Corp. heir who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2006. Prince moved to Abu Dhabi in 2010. He sold Blackwater (then Xe Services) in 2009.
