Most women at Kabul prison accused of moral crimes

Picture taken March 28, 2013 shows an Afghan female prisoner kissing her child inside her prison tract in Badam Bagh, Afghanistan's central women's prison, in Kabul, Afghanistan. 202 women living in the six- year- old jail, the majority of the women are serving sentences of up to seven years for leaving their husbands, refusing to accept a marriage arranged by their parents, or choosing to leave their parent's home with a man of their choice, all so-called “moral” crimes.

Of our spread of democracy. The punishments can including lashing on the body or bottoms of the feet until the small bones are broken. I've read descriptions of hearing the crying and screaming during the abuse of these women whom have stood up for themselves.

If we couldn't get them out of their burkas in the last, 10 years, we should have been able to keep them free of such sexist abuse, for being women.

Abject fail.

Of preventing or stemming the abuse of women in Muslim countries. The fact that these women are in a prison instead of...other options... is a step up for their punitive systems.

As Progressives, we realize that these behaviors stem from a religious fundamentalist, closed minded, narrow point of view. We also realize that many (most?) of its adherents are willing to die for those principles.

It's a damn shame that we can't point to America as a beacon of hope and true freedom for all the world's oppressed.
