MSNBC Blames and Dumps The Working Class by Moving Chris Hayes to 8 PM
The reason why Chris Hayes is moving to 8 PM is because MSNBC thinks that they can attract more viewers by not talking about issues that impact the working class.
The New York Times has the skinny on why Ed Schultz was moved to weekends, The change is predicated on the belief that MSNBC can win a wider audience with Mr. Hayes than it did with Mr. Schultz, a champion of the working class whose bluster didnt always pair well with Ms. Maddow and the channels other prime-time program, The Last Word with Lawrence ODonnell. Mr. Hayes, on the other hand, is just as wonky as Ms. Maddow and Mr. ODonnell, and is a regular contributor to both of their programs.
MSNBC thinks that their viewers dont want to hear about working class issues, so they dumped Ed Schultz for a man whose only familiarity with the term blue collar comes from books and shirt colors. White intellectual progressives are overjoyed by this move, but the execs at MSNBC dont seem to have any clue about who is actually running the left now.
White progressives arent in charge anymore. The Obama coalition of women, African-Americans, Hispanics, gays, and young people is powering the left. If MSNBC really wanted to reach a broader audience, they would have promoted someone who looks and sounds like that audience into prime time. There is not a single non-white host on cable news between 8-11 PM ET. This trend will continue with Chris Hayes.

(8,377 posts)We are simply a demographic to them. They are a business.
Is it necessary to explain this further?

(3,894 posts)I already am pretty sure I won't like the new show. It wasn't just Chris, it was the format of 2X2 rather than 5X1. I will start watching Ed on the weekends now I guess. Sorry Chris.

(3,871 posts)think of anyone duller than Hayes. He may be smart and all of that, but he's just plainly dull. Ed has personality, loves to stick it to those deserving and I would watch him when my other 8 o'clock shows were repeats or off. No more. I think the 8 o'clock hour ratings will plummet with this change, we'll see.

(14,624 posts)I usually watch at least part of his show, but when he starts frothing at the mouth, I switch channels. I love Rachel and Lawrence, but Ed is kind of hard to take. In the evening I prefer a more intellectual program and that's just not Ed's style.
I will be anxiously awaiting Chris's new show. I watch him sometimes on weekends, but it's just too early on Saturday/Sunday for a 2-hour show with pretty serious content.

(39,909 posts)The last thing we need is to have him replaced by another Rachel or Lawrence.
THAT audience already votes DEMOCRATIC.
We need someone who can broaden the appeal,
and speak to those who can't hear Rachel & Lawrence.
His "Red Meat eating, Gun Toting, Hard Working, Two Fisted, UNION Liberal Democrat" schtick counter balances the stereotype of the Latte Drinking, Elite, Limousine Liberal.
He has given MORE people, especially Mid-Westerners, permission to Vote FOR The Democrat that any other media Talking Head.

(75,480 posts)Like most conservatives, they don't think things through. There will be a solid block of wonkiness there in the evening. Ed and his excellent coverage of labor issues was a welcome blue collar lead in before the intellectualism of Rachel and Lawrence. If they wanted to give Chris a show during prime time, why didn't they give him the Chris Matthew slot before Ed that showed a rerun? Honestly, I don't understand the thinking. They will lose viewers. Didn't they see that Ed's radio show was in the top ten of all political talk radio shows? They really are not doing their research.

(84,711 posts)Thought the older folks would get tired of the MSNBC weekend with old videos or lock up prison stuff and like a show like Ed's. Thought it would appeal to those who remember strong labor but don't get out on the weekend nights like the "young folks" do.
Ed might be good in that slot bringing in viewers who were familair with those times when labor was strong.

(5 posts)Chris has a brain and does more than scream and rant like an idiot. Definitely a stronger lead-in to Maddow, and a better transition from Matthews.
Now if we could just move Al to the weekends and replace him with Ezra.....

(32,025 posts)Politicus should look at a breakdown of Hayes' guest list, it's more diverse than any of the Sunday morning shows.
Also it seems that the working class is a shrinking demographic for the corporate media. Do you think ABC would ever do another Roseanne or Home Improvement type show?
