Going to work could be more harmful than smoking, a new study shows.
That is if your job involves sitting around for long periods of time.
Research carried out by the American College of Cardiology shows that prolonged sitting is linked to increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer and even early death and could be just as dangerous, if not more so, than smoking.
Cardiologist Dr David Coven said: 'Smoking certainly is a major cardiovascular risk factor and sitting can be equivalent in many cases.

The above is a more than a year old, but it is a very interesting idea...That sitting around, not moving at a computer, TV or job may injure life more than smoking...or, at least equal to smoking..I wonder if that includes hours at Democratic Underground???..
Seriously, I have looked at a number of stories about this, and clearly our sedentary life in the U.S.A. is not a good thing for all of us..And lastly, these new studies come close to proving that prolonged sitting,(more than an two or three hours, without getting up) will injure life, in spite of exercize done earlier or later. That is serious.
Here is another study...complete..where they prove it..Yes, this will take a lot of time to read..but it is the proof.
This one called, "Sitting Time and Mortality from all Causes..Cancer and Cardiovascular"..It is scientific stuff, but this one nails it, and that is where many of these ideas come from.....October 2008..and.. Med Sci Sports Exerc.2009 May; 41(5) 998-1005

another link that kinda simplifies the one above..from the National Institute of Health

please note: the above study includes over 17,000 Canadians of all ages. That is a very large sample indeed..oh well...time to get up and walk around...Stuart G.

(28,498 posts)However, during the past year I've taken to getting up and walking around a bit every two hours. I've mapped out a course involving several stairs, both up and down, and moderately-long walks in the building I work.
I'm away from my desk about 10-15 minutes but feel it's necessary for reasons of health...

I'm a dead man then.
Because I'm a heavy smoker and I sit on my ass all day.

(38,448 posts)One day I started reading a number of these studies about sitting on our asses. One ...which I cannot link to, sorry, said that by getting up and walking around, say 5 to 10 minutes an hour...can help to regulate insulin levels. The sitting itself, causes creation of bad levels of insulin. I think that was a follow up to the original 2008 /2009 study.
Review looked at 18 studies with 794,000 adults in U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan

Adults who sit for long periods may face a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes than individuals who move around more often, a new review concludes.
Even adults who met guidelines for physical activity risked compromising their health by sitting for prolonged periods, say researchers who estimated that sitting behaviour was associated with double the risk of diabetes.

(38,448 posts)The headline on the Daily Mail in the op, was probably too sensational..but, the idea of sitting at a job, TV or computer endlessly was never thought to be extremely dangerous..and that is what this is about. Get up for 5 or 10 minutes an hour..reduce the danger.

We stand around a lot here at Mens Health. In fact, a few of us dont even have office chairs. Instead, we write, edit, and answer e-mailsa lot of e-mailswhile standing in front of our computers. All day long. Why?
It all started last summer, when Assistant Editor Maria Masters came across a shocking study in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (one of dozens of research journals we comb each month as we put together the magazine). Scientists at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana analyzed the lifestyles of more than 17,000 men and women over about 13 years, and found that people who sit for most of the day are 54 percent more likely to die of heart attacks.
Thats rightI said 54 percent!

(5,763 posts)When I'm working or playing, in fact. I have my computer and mouse up on boxes on my desk. I've been doing it for two months now. The only times I sit down is at meals, meetings, or socializing with friends. I noticed an immediate improvement in health. I have more energy and more a will to do more exercise.
Surprisingly, I had benign prostate enlargement which improved when I stopped sitting so long. Maybe prostates become enlarged from men sitting on them all day?
