It's sad when private school is a better choice than a public one because the latter is less diverse.

Twin sisters Ogor and Ngozi Ogehdo, both 21-years-old and now college students left the public school system behind after elementary school for lots of reasons. They considered returning to attend a specialized high school, but chose not to because they believed they’d be happier and in a more diverse environment at a private school. ...

“We aren’t making the allegation that the test is the problem but what we are saying is that the use of the test as a sole criterion is just bad educational policy,” said Rachel Kleinman ... “It’s just a question of the city not keeping up with best practices and we think a change will be better for all students.”

Kleinman said improving access to test preparation – the solution proposed by many — isn’t enough. “Test prep is definitely an issue and the city does give some free test prep,” Kleinman said. “However, preparing students for a test that doesn’t actually test anything is bad educational policy. It certainly can help but it’s not the ultimate answer.” ...

crazy that bloomberg is taking such an oversimplified position on this. he says there's "nothing subjective" in the admission process because it relies on a single test score. great. um, there are test prep time & costs. there's the fact that test taking is a small part of school, life, and performance. as a good test taker, i have a good sense to know admissions shouldn't be based on a test score alone.
