Martin Frost: The Wonder of Molly Ivins

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/80270.html

I met the late Texas journalist Molly Ivins 41 years ago, when she was writing for the Texas Observer about a state political scandal being played out in a federal securities fraud case. I was clerking for the judge hearing the case, Sarah T. Hughes.

I saw her again Saturday on Washington’s Arena Stage, where she was stunningly evoked by actress Kathleen Turner. The one-woman show, “Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins,” opened last week.

My friend Molly was a Texas original — we seem to have more of those than most states. Raised in a wealthy Houston family and a graduate of Smith College, she turned out to be, in the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s critics, “a traitor to her class.” She was an unapologetic liberal in a deep red state.

During her 40 years in journalism (she died from breast cancer in 2007), Ivins was one of a very few truly gifted political commentators in our country.

Molly never missed a year regaling and teaching us at Univ of Colorado's annual Conference on World Affairs. When a Texan conservative says something stupid I immediately say thank you for reminding me that our Molly, the Texas wonderwoman who would have had a great retort.

She was the judge that swore LBJ into office aboard Air Force One on that dark day in Dallas, almost 49 years ago.
