Asa Hutchinson: I ran for president as a Republican in 2024. I won't vote for Trump

Regretfully, Donald Trump has redefined the GOP in his image and has put personal ego above the common good. He has made the GOP the party that likes Russian President Vladimir Putin over the freedom fighters in Ukraine. He has transfigured conservatism into isolationism by abandoning NATO and U.S. leadership among the nations of the world. He has brought back the ancient idea of economic protectionism with his “ring around America” plan to impose tariffs on friend and foe alike. And by doing so, he says America cannot win and compete in the global marketplace.

These ideas are not Republican principles but anathema to the success story conservative leaders have built over the last 50 years.

I get asked a lot if I believe Trump is a threat to our democracy. I am not good at predicting the future, but we can learn from history and we should take heed when politicians tell us what they are going to do.

Trump disqualified himself on Jan. 6, 2021

In terms of history, we all witnessed the violent attack on our national Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, by those wishing to overturn the last election. This was not an act of patriots as Trump likes to say, but it was a real threat to democracy.

They were taught to give away the bank, and cut every government entities' budget, then call them incapable, so they can sell off our commons to their buddies for pennies on the dollar. Cut regulations so they can poison the water we drink, while selling it to us for triple the price.

The fleecing and gutting of our country started 50 years ago, and the 6 not so Supreme Court are co-conspirators.

character issues with Trump. Not nearly enough, but better than Pence.

Nikki could be a hero to many...easily. By being honest and stating what we all know about Trump as a candidate and as a person. He's not just failing at 'representing conservative thought'...he's failing at being a human. He's a deeply flawed, limited, horrible person. And it isn't stated often enough outside DU and Lincoln Project and a few other places.

Do it Nikki. Would make a difference.

... what a LOT of Repukes are already saying to themselves. So I give Mr. Hutchinson credit for that.

I'm not saying these Repukes are going to turn around and vote for Joe Biden, but maybe some will. Mostly they're going to stay home and not vote at all. Or they'll vote R for the down-ticket candidates and just leave the top slot empty. By and large, the Repukes DON'T want Chump back in the White House, no matter what their lips are saying.

As Democrats, all we need to do is get the vote out. And I know we will. This is going to be a historic win for the Dems in November. We'll keep the Senate and win the House PLUS Joe Biden will get another 4 years in the White House.
