Updated 4:07 PM EDT, March 15, 2024

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California man who was part of the loosely organized anti-government “ boogaloo movement ” was sentenced to life in prison Friday for his role in the shooting death of a federal security guard and wounding of another.

Robert Allen Justus was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, the Bay Area News Group reported.

Justus was convicted last year of murder and attempted murder for driving a van while his accomplice, Steven Carrillo, opened fire at a guard station at the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building in Oakland in May 2020.

David Patrick Underwood was killed and his partner was wounded.

David Patrick Underwood, 53, was killed and his partner was wounded as they guarded the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building in Oakland while a large demonstration over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis was underway nearby. Officials said Carrillo used the protest as cover for the crime and for his escape.

After shooting the two officers, Justus told agents, Carrillo "said words to the effect of, 'Did you see how they fucking fell?'" The complaint says Justus described Carrillo as being "excited and thrilled after the shooting."

...

The criminal complaint quotes several social media posts Carrillo made in the 48 hours before the attack suggesting he intended to target federal officers. Those posts included a Facebook comment on the morning of the attack that urged people to take advantage of the protests responding to Floyd's killing.

"Go to the riots and support our own cause," the complaint quotes Carrillo as saying. "Show them the real targets. Use their anger to fuel our fire. ... We have mobs of angry people to use to our advantage.”
