Mary Sanchez: Issa's pointless inquisition

Mary Sanchez: Issa's pointless inquisition

Rep. Darrell Issa's joke of an investigation into Operation Fast and Furious needs a name.

Operation Plodding and Pointless might do.

The probe into the failed federal effort to track U.S.-purchased guns trafficked to Mexican drug cartels has reached a new height of dudgeon. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives (along with a handful of Democrats) have found Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for withholding documents subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee, chaired by Issa.

The committee's hearings on Fast and Furious have droned on for more than a year now. Yet, to date, no testimony has been taken to address the problem that lay at the heart of the so-called scandal: lax U.S. gun laws that benefit gun shops and do little to stop criminals from getting access to high-powered weaponry.

Issa saw to that when the inquiry began. He laid down the ground rule that no testimony would be admitted that commented on gun-control laws or legislation. As committee chairman, that's his prerogative. But it's a transparent tactic.

Instead, Issa has focused his inquisitorial zeal to achieve one aim: to give the Obama administration a black eye.

Here's the simple formula:

(1) Identify with a group of people. It doesn't matter what sort of group we're talking about here; the principle's the same whether we're talking ethnic, religious, political, hobby club, I could go on and on.

(2) Thus identified, and having no predilection toward cultivating a genuine "mind of your own", do as you were thoroughly instructed in the US Public Education System: *embody* the belief system of your group.

(3) In order to compensate for the utter lack of genuine personal fulfillment to be found in following steps (1) and (2) above, elevate your adrenaline levels by harboring negative emotions toward any humans who appear to be in opposition to "your group". It's called The False Security of Clan Identity. Doesn't Righteous Wrath feel S-o-o-o G-o-o-o-o-o-o-d?!

(4) Utterly refuse to consider any and all elements of truth that may lie in the positions of your newly declared enemies (see (3) above). This, by the way, is an excellent means further to stultify your free-thinking abilities.

(5) Ascribe fictional motives to your imagined enemies EVERY CHANCE YOU GET; after all, one must persevere in firmifying one's noodly nothings ... right?!

(6) Congratulations! You've just succumbed to Divide And Conquer. Enjoy the tasty Kool-Aid.
