Donald Trump has unified America - against him

The presidents assault on decency has created an emerging coalition, across boundaries of race, class and partisan politics

Donald Trump is on the verge of accomplishing what no American president has ever achieved a truly multi-racial, multi-class, bipartisan political coalition so encompassing it could realign US politics for years to come.
Unfortunately for Trump, that coalition has come into existence to prevent him from having another term in office.
Start with race. Rather than fuel his base, Trumps hostility toward people protesting the police killing of George Floyd and systemic racism has pulled millions of white Americans closer to black Americans. More than half of whites now say they agree with the ideas expressed by the Black Lives Matter movement, and more white people support than oppose protests against police brutality. To a remarkable degree, the protests themselves have been biracial.
As John Lewis, the great civil rights hero who died on Friday, said last month near where Trump and William Barr, the attorney general, had set federal police in riot gear and wielding tear gas on peaceful protesters, Mr President, the American people have a right to protest. You cannot stop the people with all of the forces that you may have at your command.

(11,885 posts)The landslide against him and republicans will grow much larger. trump's actions now is really hurting him and the GOP, and I wonder if he's trying to hurt the party now too for revenge, and knowing the American people will never vote him into office again. His refusal to take action preventing this virus , and actively interfering with any response makes me suspect he could care less about deaths or cases , and its all about himself, at our expense. He can't spin the deaths he's caused , or the upcoming depression he has us heading towards, no matter what he claims . People don't believe him anymore, and for good reasons.

(5,275 posts)The poll result that I heard that was most hopeful was that 50 % of respondents said they would not vote for Trump no matter what. That would seem to be game, set, match but we cannot get happy or complacent.
There are signs this could be a turning point like 1932s election, which ushered in FDR and his New Deal. That lasted in some form till Reagan.
If, as likely, Joe wins I hope he sticks to his pledge to hold Trump legally accountable for various crimes.
