Senator Lifts Hold On Military Promotions After Assurances On Impeachment Witness

https://www.npr.org/2020/07/15/891266631/senator-lifts-hold-on-military-promotions-after-assurances-on-impeachment-witnes

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said Tuesday that she would lift a hold on more than 1,100 senior military promotions after the Department of Defense assured her that it did not block the promotion of Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman — a key witness in the impeachment inquiry of President Trump.

Duckworth, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and combat veteran, put the hold on promotions earlier this month, demanding written confirmation from Defense Secretary Mike Esper that the former National Security Council aide had been recommended for advancement to Full Colonel.

"Donald Trump's unprecedented efforts to further politicize our military by retaliating against Lt. Col. Vindman — for doing his patriotic duty of telling the truth under oath — are unconscionable," the senator said in a statement announcing that she would lift the hold. "I'm glad the Department of Defense was finally able to set the record straight that Vindman had earned and was set to receive a promotion to Colonel."

"We must always protect the merit-based system that is the foundation of our Armed Forces from political corruption and unlawful retaliation," she added.

“Federal Law
10 U.S. Code § 1370: In order for an officer to be eligible for retirement in any grade above O4, the officer must have served for at least 3 years in that grade. This requirement may be reduced to no less than 2 years as authorized by the SECDEF. Only the President can waive the 2-year minimum and only in cases of extreme hardship or unusual circumstances. Officers who do not meet the TIG minimum in the grade held at the time of retirement are retired in the next-lower grade in which they satisfactorily served at least 6 months. In order for an active-duty officer to be eligible for retirement in the grade of O4 or lower, the officer must have served in that grade for at least 6 months.“

But as a Commissioned Officer, even when you are retirement eligible after 20 years of service, the correct term is to "resign my commission".

And I would defy ANY republi-CON to badmouth her, and try to attack a decorated combat veteran who lost both her legs IN combat.

They'd certainly try to attack her, but I suspect her service - and her sacrifice alone - would render her quite untouchable. Whoever would dare attack her would only wind up looking UTTERLY SHITTY.

For telling the truth under oath. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is refuting a single word of what he said. Apparently you are supposed to lie under oath, or just keep your mouth shut, in order to protect the traitor-in-chief...

All I see is that Senator Duckworth lifted her hold based on assurances that the Army wasn't blocking the promotion. (At this point, an assurance that I think worthless.) Since LTC Vindman is retiring, it's all a moot point. I doubt a retired officer will be promoted, at least for purposes of his retirement pay.
