Trump Thinks Attacking Iran Will Get Him Reelected. He's Wrong.

Beginning in 2011, and continuing through the next year, Donald Trump began obsessively predicting that President Obama would start a war with Iran in order to be reelected. Trump stated it publicly, on at least a half-dozen occasions, explicitly positing that attacking Iran would help Obama win reelection.

Just like Trump’s notions that Obama would direct his attorney general whom to investigate or not, or pressure the Federal Reserve to loosen the money supply in order to help his party win the next election, Trump’s attacks on Obama were the purest form of projection. They reflect his cynical belief that every president will naturally abuse their powers, and thus provide a roadmap to his own intentions.

And indeed, Trump immediately followed the killing of Qasem Suleimani by metaphorically wrapping himself in the stars and stripes. No doubt he anticipates at least a faint echo of the rally-around-the-flag dynamic that has buoyed many of his predecessors. But Trump’s critics need not assume he will enjoy any such benefit, and should grasp that their own response will help determine it.

One salient fact is that it’s not 2001, or even 2003. A poll earlier this summer found that just 18 percent of Americans prefer to “take military action against Iran” as against 78 percent wanting to “rely mainly on economic and diplomatic efforts.”

The Iraq invasion occurred a few years after 9/11. While they had nothing to do with 9/11 the attack on our own soil was fresh in the minds of many people.

Iran for what ever their faults are have not attacked us here. Maybe Trump is hoping they will.

And what's more: if they don't (and they won't), Cheeto will probably stage a "terrorist attack" against U.S. citizens themselves.

He knows war represents his only guarantee of re-election (or as close to a guarantee as you can come).

Accordingly, he'll try anything to provoke a war - no matter what the cost or how many die.

And since Iran is very unlikely to bite (they know election-year politics motivated this), I for one would not be surprised if Cheeto opts for some staged attack against Americans.

Nothing is beneath this administration.

rump has done the exact same thing that he predicted that President Obama would do (falsely).

Desperate to retain office, he is turning over rocks and looking under bridges for the trolls of war, so he can retain his office. rump is now guilty of the crime of war, and looking more and more incompetent as time goes on, and will get us all into a war of, at the minimum, a war of attrition, and probably worse. Didn't do one damn thing to calm things down and try to more effectively negotiate w/ Iran. Didn't even try. rump went into this whole scenario from the very beginning intending to start a war w/ Iran. Planned it all along. Sounds like a crime to me of sorts, being that he failed miserably in securing American security.
