Billionaire Tells Wealthy To 'Lighten Up' About Elizabeth Warren: 'You're Not Victims'

10/19/2019 08:04 pm ET

“You’re the richest people in the world. How in God’s name do you feel like a victim?” asks former Goldman Sachs partner Michael Novogratz.

By Mary Papenfuss

Billionaire and former Goldman Sachs partner Michael Novogratz urged his rich friends to “lighten up” about Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and her plans to impose a wealth tax if she’s elected president.

“You’re not victims; you’re the richest people in the world,” Novogratz said Friday in an interview with Bloomberg. “How in God’s name do you feel like a victim?”

“It’s insanity,” he said. ”‘They’re going to come and get us.’ No! You’re going to get taxed a little more. Lighten up!”

Novogratz, who is now invested in cryptocurrency, said it makes sense to tax the wealthy to help those who are struggling in the nation.

Like gambling, sex, drugs, etc.

The problem is, for most of these billionaires, (not all) it is never going to be enough, ever. It only makes sense, especially in America. There is the dopamine rush of the next billion and oneupmanship and the power, (think Kochs).

While some people think it is just fine and dandy that billionaires can have all the billions they want as a right, the resulting inequity is not going to turn out very well in the long run. It is the same as the impact that big corporations have on the world in that they can grow and thrive, get huge breaks on taxes or pay none and yet utilize our commons and infrastructure and influence our politics all they want.

So, we have an addiction problem and, like it or not, the way capitalism works now, it is an enabler. Meanwhile, the middle-class shrinks and we own less and less and less. How is that working out?
