Famed biologist E.O. Wilson has argued in recent years that humans should set aside half of Earth as nature, an ambitious proposition to stave off mass extinction and safeguard the bulk of our planets biodiversity, including its people.
Now, a new poll reveals Wilson isnt alone in his thinking. On average, the majority of survey respondents across a dozen countries said more than half of the planets land and sea should be protected.

The survey, a collaboration between the National Geographic Society and Ipsos, polled 12,000 adults in Australia, Brazil, China, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. Researchers sought to understand how people in these countriesall places where NGS worksvalue nature and biological diversity, information Baillie says is vital for guiding policymakers and measuring the organizations long-term impact.

Concern about extinction was highest among people in Mexico, Brazil, and South Africacountries with rich biodiversity and some of the worlds greatest and great numbers of species now at risk of extinction. Mexico has the most, with 665 endangered species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

(22,143 posts)Harping on that respondents wanted 1/2 of the land and sea be protected probably offers nothing on how to do this. Also, I recall that people by the thousands brought slices (tiny) of the Amazon forest in order to help preserve it, what happened to all of this money/set asides?
Again, another poll, going on and on, about the need for this, etc. You are not gaining anything because most people are already well aware of this need to preserve this critical environments. Another worthless poll.

(22,143 posts)being 70% of our planet, would contribute quite a bit to 'bio diversity'.
