The lock was broken when the employees of Brandão Monteiro Municipal School arrived to work on an August morning. In place of its 300 elementary schoolchildren, the space occupants were servicemen.
It was one more straining week in the favelas in Northern Rio de Janeiro, in the Alemão, Penha and Maré complexes, where 4,200 military men and 70 policemen were in a massive operation, under the federal interventor's orders, to verify tips of criminal activities.
For three of the five days that the security forces remained in the area, classes were suspended, and the Army forces used the school to take shelter, plan their strategies, park their vehicles, sleep, and use the bathroom, but they didn't check with the principal or the mayor's office.
